Any way to restore NT4/Windows2000 login?

Everyone seems to be loving the new login screen--except me. I do not want all the users' names displayed at login, especially not with idiotic graphics. It is just bad practice. I have re-enabled CTRL-ALT-DEL for login, but I cannot seem to get back to the

USERNAME: [blank]
PASSWORD: [blank]

interface that I loved for its simplicity as well as security. I looked in all the usual places. Please don't tell me I have to be part of a domain for this to go away. Anyone know how to help me?

I too liked the blank NT4 logon. I dont know specifically but in the tutorial section here @ sf there is a tutorial about chaning your logon screen. There is also an app to do it. I dont know if either will do blank wit huid and pword but its worth a look. Im sure someone else will remember the apps name.

Hope this helps a little

Try this. As close as you will get I think without joining a domain.

Type secpol.msc in Vista's Start Menu Search Bar and hit Enter. This will open the Local Security Policy editor.
Navigate to Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options.

Look for Interactive Logon: Hide last username on the Right Hand Side. Set it to Enabled. Click Apply. Then close that window.

To Enable CTRL-ALT-DELETE Key Combo before login:

Type netplwiz in the Start Menu search box and hit Enter. This will open up the User Accounts dialog box. Select Advanced tab > Secure logon. Check Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Click Apply. Then Reboot.

I was able to do that, but that did not do it completely. However, while browsing through Security Options of Local Policies of GPEDIT, enabling "INTERACTIVE: DO NOT DISPLAY LAST USERNAME" got me pretty close.

Still lacking, though, is that there is a frame for a user's picture. Can this be done away with?

Lordofpi,

While using logging on with a username and password, the picture frame at log on will be blank since there is no user assigned to the icon anymore. It cannot be changed unless you go back to just entering a password though.

Okay, thanks. It's not easy being old school, lol. My one friend looked at my system and said, "Why do you even upgrade? You just put everything back to the way you had it in NT?" Lol.

LOL, you could tell your friend that it's what's under the hood that counts. ;)

As usual you rock. I knew there was a tutorial and suggested a search in my first post but you found him

Haha, that actually -is- what I had told him. My response was, "I'm not here for the GUI, I'm here for the kernel dammit!'

Which basically is true. I don't know about the rest of you, but I personally don't notice a total overhaul/improvement of the GUI for the better since NT5/2000 (improvement meaning something that saves time, is less cluttered, and increases productivity). I see some minor improvements here and there, and for those I am thankful. Desktop's cleaned up, the search in the start menu, the reorganizing of the locations of many things, etc. Many of these other changes he says I should just adapt to just feel like change for change's sake rather than true improvements on the way I interact with the OS.
