You're computer is most likely running a pentium 4. When I upgraded, It took four hours to load because it is outdated. It runs unbearably slow and freezes at spots. My friend owns a business and had to upgrade a guys software from xp to 7. He ended up giving the guy his money back because it ran so slow. Be prepared to spend south of 400 bucks to upgrade

Dodge, The reason that the OS Windows 7 was Shipped with a minimum Requirements was to ensure that users read what there computer was supposed to be running as a MINIMUM of hardware.

If you did not check the MINIMUM Requirements then that was your fault to be honest,

also there is no problem with the Pentium 4, I had Windows 7 Home Running on an old Celeron D and Pentium 4 Before i upgraded to my current version, and it ran with few problems.

You cannot blame others for ingnorance to even check the system requirements, thats like buying a Pc game and running it on a Mac, It has to be compatible.

I installed Win 7 on a few P4 machines, but they all had at least 1.5GB of ram and a newer hard disk.
the last one I did was a P4 2.8Ghz Dell with 2GB of ram and a new 1TB Black SATA drive. Ran excellent.

@Op - Not true, Windows 7 runs great on a 9 year old HP zd7000 series laptop with a Pentium 4 3.06GHz. Besides, Windows may act like this without the necessary drivers, but when given the right drivers, it runs great.

It should be enough RAM to run I think since OP said he ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which if didn't flag any errors... should be ok. It could be due also to a really bad DVD read speed or something like that (4 hours and more for installing Windows 7).

Hello there!

Upgrade is always a bad idea in my opinion. A clean install would do the trick also since it's an old PC most Windows itself find most of the drivers. I don't have a Pentium but my desktop is AMD Athlon X2 3600+ and 1GB RAM which runs fine.

Hope this helps!

If this was a change from XP, it had to be a clean install.

Sounds like OP has multiple issues. Be more specific Dodge2461 and someone will be happy to help you sort it out.

I have Win7 Ultimate on a 6yr old HP running an Athlon64 X2, 2GB RAM and it runs fine. I did get a graphics card so it handles Aero well.

Pentium 4's can run 7 fine, providing you have enough RAM as LiquidSnak deftly points out. It will beg with 512mb to the point you can't run AV or gadgets, but 1gb seems to be the hump. 2gb will make it whistle while it works if you stick with 32 bit..

But remember they're getting old so be good to your processor and clean out its heatsink and all other case dust, repaste it if necessary. I have several running for over ten years - one 24/7 - and they respond well to cleaning and maintenance if it's done with great care.

Haha you think i did an upgrade from Xp to Windows 7?

Because i said i upgraded from it does not imply i did a software upgrade, i actually did a custom install to home then an upgrade to ultimate...

Also i Upgraded the Hardware to what i now have :D

also there is no problem with the Pentium 4, I had Windows 7 Home Running on an old Celeron D and Pentium 4 Before i upgraded to my current version, and it ran with few problems.

You cannot blame others for ingnorance to even check the system requirements, thats like buying a Pc game and running it on a Mac, It has to be compatible.

Seconding that....Windows 7 runs GREAT on a Pentium 4.

Ahh no problems, Just got a bit confused as your a senior member and it seemed like you was being sarcastic :D

Nice to Know you agree though Thanks :D

I have an old system running Windows 7:

AMD Athlon XP +2400 (2.0Ghz)
1GB DDR RAM @ 133MHz
128MB 64-Bit GeForce 6200 Graphics Card
x1 500GB PATA HDD
x1 150GB PATA HDD

If you think that Pentium 4 was hurting, think again.

BTW, the poor ol' Athon XP generates a lot of heat, great for the winter.
