Today, I changed 2 of our computers (plan on doing them all) and now I am the administrator on those computers, I want to grant access to ALL documents, music, videos, etc. files that already exist on their PC's.

I really just want to block internet porn and the likes. :o

I installed Windows 7 Family Safety, but I don't want to keep them from their files.

Can I still be the Administrator and grant file access?

PLEASE help!!!!

Public folders are accessible to all users without admin permission.

Copy or move those folders to Public folders. Every user can access them now.

Use Copy To or Move To option in your right click context menu.

Thank you for the information.

I really want them to have access to everything on their computer.

When I become the administrator all access to their files was unavailable to them.

I do not have them time or desire to grant access to each individual file. These are their to begin with. Did I misunderstand what I was reading?

I really just want to limit what they access on the internet and the time frame they use their computers.

Thanks again for any help.

Terresa ;)

Teresa Tate,

I really just want to limit what they access on the internet and the time frame they use their computers.

if you are talking about your children, this is only possible if they aren't normal children. You can thwart the child the first time, but then they ask their friends, they go to some of their favorite sites and ask how or they google the topic.

If this is your own children, remember that you may stop them at home but not when they are away.

Best is to devote your efforts to develop their own abilities to evaluate knowledge. I have two marvelous, now adult, children. Raise them up in the way they should go and they shall not depart from it.

Good luck in your endeavors.

I was "answering" the first post. Yours (I believe is the second) and it "told" me to move or copy. I was alble to move my documents to the publich folders, however anything that is on the desktop is not accessible to everyone. My husband uses his desktop like a real desk top and keeps his files all over the desktop. Because this is the computer he uses for his business, I don't want any real limitation on the computing side of the PC, just the internet.

Here's the real situation. I am trying to find a way to limit access to the internet for my entire family. Originally I chose OpenDNS, but I have ATT Uverse and it is too complicated. The Geek Squad told me that Microsoft had a program (and it was free) that would be what I wanted, but I would need to be the administrator. Perhaps I misunderstood him. Maybe I just need to the administrator on the Windows Safe Family and not the computer itself.

Hope I answered the right post.

In Windows ( Vista and Windows 7 ), it is called Parental Control. Logon to the administrator account and then apply the Parental Controls. Read the artocle below.

Note : the blue words are "live" links. Click it to read more about that subject.

Parental Cotrols :
You can use Parental Controls to help manage how your children use the computer. For example, you can set limits on the hours that your children can use the computer, the types of games they can play, and the programs they can run.
GetContent.aspx
Go to the Windows website to watch a video about how to set up Parental Controls.
When Parental Controls blocks access to a game or program, a notification is displayed that the program has been blocked. Your child can click a link in the notification to request permission for access to that game or program. You can allow access by entering your account information.
To set up Parental Controls for your child, you'll need your own administrator user account. Before you get started, make sure each child that you want to set up Parental Controls for has a standard user account. Parental Controls can be applied only to standard user accounts. For more information about user accounts and setting them up, see What is a user account?
In addition to the controls that Windows provides, you can install additional controls, such as web filtering and activity reporting, from a separate service provider. For more information, see How can I add additional parental controls?
To turn on Parental Controls for a standard user account

  1. Click to open Parental Controls. *
    GetContent.aspx
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Click the standard user account that you want to set Parental Controls for. If the standard user account isn't set up yet, click Create a new user account to set up a new account.
Under Parental Controls, click On, enforce current settings.

Once you've turned on Parental Controls for your child's standard user account, you can adjust the following individual settings that you want to control:
    • Time limits. You can set time limits to control when children are allowed to log on to the computer. Time limits prevent children from logging on during the specified hours. You can set different logon hours for every day of the week. If they're logged on when their allotted time ends, they'll be automatically logged off. For more information, see Control when children can use the computer.
    • Games. You can control access to games, choose an age-rating level, choose the types of content you want to block, and decide whether you want to allow or block unrated or specific games. For more information, see Choose which games children can play.
    • Allow or block specific programs. You can prevent children from running programs that you don't want them to run. For more information, see Prevent children from using specific programs.

Okay, I watched these videos and I had already set up most of this settings.

I think this is what my ultimate question is: Do I need to be the administrator on my husbands PC or can I just be the administrator on WLSF?

I still cannot see the desktop files as a guest or a user, but I will try again.

Thanks for all your efforts!!!!:geek:

If you have your husband admin password, you can apply the Parental Controls while logging on to your own account. Just enter your husband's admin password when you are prompted.

Editing : if it won't let you, then you will have to log on to your husband's admin account. But I doubt that.

What is WLSF ?? Windows Live ..... ? Family Safety ?

As to the files that you can not see...
I told you in my first reply..... use admin account or admin password, Copy/To or Move/To all those files to Public Folders.

Why all the changing account type charade ? There is nothing wrong to have both accounts ( your husband's and yours ) set as admin accounts.

No. My fault. Itchy fingers. :D

Q and A

LOL;) Waiting for answer. You have been very kind and helpful. Many, many thanks!!

In case you missed my " forthcoming " answer, here is a repeat .....

1. Windows Live Family Safety.
I have given you links to WLFS portal in your new thread.
http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/177024-logging-onto-familysafety-live-com.html For some reason I had to restart my PC for the login to work. All is well on the logging in and changing status'.

2. However, the documents on his desktop were not viewable to anyone except the Administrator
Use Copy/to or Move/to option and have those desktop files moved to Public Folders. If I change the way he does "business" (leaving things on his desktop) I will be in trouble. He just want internet access blocked. :)

3. I have his password and I used it. Actually, I am now the Admin and changed his status to User. This is probably my biggester error.
Perhaps what I needed to do was to leave him as the Admin on his PC and just change his "status" within the windows 7 Family Safety Live program. Is this what I should have done ?
Why all the changing account type charade ? There is nothing wrong to have both accounts ( your husband's and yours ) set as admin accounts. I thought I had to be an Administrator on his PC and his "status" to be "User" in order for it to work correctly - keep his PC of the no-no sites. If he can be the administrator on his PC and keep control of his files on his PC and I am the Admin on the WLFS and keep "trouble/porn" of his and the childrens' PC's, then that is the best solution.

Please tell me I got it right this time, please. :D I tried to hire someone today to do this so I could be more useful today, but he/Geek Squad salesman talked me out of it. Again, thank you for your patience. Pass or Failed?

>>>>If I change the way he does "business" (leaving things on his desktop) I will be in trouble. He just want internet access blocked

If you use " copy to " option, all you did is " copy " his files to a public folder.
He still has his files where they are.

>>>> I thought I had to be an Administrator on his PC and his "status" to be "User" in order for it to work correctly - keep his PC of the no-no sites. You need to be an admin in order to apply the Family Safety restrictions. Yes.

As to the rest of your sentence, You lost me there completely. I have never been able to fully understand that part from the beginning. You will have to explain more about the relevancies among ...... trouble/porn - your husband - your kids.

By the way, why you switch attention to Windows Live Family Safety ?
What's wrong with the Windows 7 own built-in Parental Control I showed you ? I thought you were already in the process of setting it up.
Windows Live Family Safety and Windows Parental Control are 2 different animals.
