Whenever I sign onto WLM, that is to put in my info, click sign in, and I get signed in, contact list shows, but than it crashes. Standard error message of "This program has stopped working blah blah blah"

I was running Windows live beta 7000 before with no issues. It's not an issue with my computer or network, as everything else is in tip top shape.

I have tried to re-install this numerous times to no avail.

I have tried uninstalling my Anti-virus. Also Disables Windows firewall. Also, I always have Defender and UAC off.

Im running windows 7 RC, 7100.
I have a q6600 CPU, Asus p5n-d mobo, the f1 spinpoint 1tb hd, evga 9800+ Vid card.

I have tried running the program as administrator, in different compatability modes, i've tried re-starting than logging in.

Oh, and why the hell do I get no options when installing windows live messenger? this pisses me right off. I can't even chosse where to install to. It's bogus.

Look at my specs - I have *no* issues with WLM.

Are you using an official DL? did you install any wink / nudge packs? Installed any addons like Messenger Plus? Checked your computer for malware?

Thats why this befuddles me so. I just installed this yesterday. I have no malware, Im sure of that, I've had no chance to get any.

Also, I downloaded this from the offical windows live essentials link...

Oh, Something I just noticed. I tried to log onto a different email to see how that would work. And first, let me tell you what happend earlier.

After i installed, I tried to logon with my addy and Pass, and it would just do the whole, msn dudes spinning... than stop and go back to sign in screen. It took me like 10-15 tries before finally it connected, but than crashed. I had assumed maybe I had the wrong info somewhere, but now I've noticed if i DO put in the wrong info it tells me.

So now, trying to sign in with a diff email adress, I'm getting the same thing happening, it doesent connect through. I havent gotten it to go to the contact list yet.

That did not help. I still havent been able to connect on my second email.

These emails are both working fine if I go through hotmail though.

Uninstall it, reboot, download it again from M$ site (delete the previous DL) and then try installing it again - it may be a corrupted DL....

Also, as a test, you could try DLing another client that supports WLM (Adium, Pidgen, Miranda, Trillium) and test your accounts in those - if it does something similar then it is quite possibly something else - such as you being logged in on another machine with some sort of reg hack and / or add-on that constantly logs you back in if you are logged out, that sort of thing...which could then make W7 *think* that this copy is not working b/c it is logging in only to get logged right back out....

What type of internet connection do you have? how are you connected?

I will give all of this a shot, although each time i re-installed, I also re-downloaded. But I will also give trillium a shot.

Oh, and i found someone else with the same issue, Windows Live Messenger 2009 not working on my Windows 7 (Build 7100)? - Yahoo! UK & Ireland Answers

Oh, and I have a good connection, I'm wired. Through bell, I'm in canada. Can't think of exactly how to describe it, but lets just say it's good. I can easily pull off over 1mb/s download speeds with a download manager and rapidshare links as a member.

Fresh install as of yesterday. Not an upgrade, wasn't able to upgrade the old Windows 7 beta.

Speaking of that, 1 quick off topic question. I wasn't able to upgrade my old windows 7, or write over it. So I've got windows 7 beta sitting on a partition and I can't get rid of it. I can't format that drive or delete the files. And I can't Format it through CMD either.

OK, now we're getting somewhere. I suspect there is more than one issue going on here, and it all (somehow) ties together.

Have you tried downloading a tool like GPartEd ( a dowloadable ISO (disc image) that you can burn and that loads its own OS and allows you to do all sorts of partition manipulations from an OS other than Windows (namely Linux)?

Also, let's take a look at a couple of things - what happened with the Beta so that you cannot *delete* the partition, and how much free space do you have right now?

I have no knowledge of the tool GpartEd although it sounds like it could fix my problem. Heck, Maybe Norton partition magic could, I just haven't installed that one yet.

Anyways, I have a 1tb Hd here, with three partitions on it currently.

Origanally I had two. One was 50gb and had my windows 7 beta on it. C.
My 2nd Partition, I, Had basicly Alll of my other files, around 500gb full, with another 100 empty. And than I also had around 250 of unpartitioned space.

Once I had to install the RC, i made a new partition, B, and gave it 50 gigs aswell, and installed the RC.

If I go to disk management, I cannot format or do really anything with C, the windows 7 BETA drive.

I also can't format it through CMD

Do you happen to have a ubuntu live disc on hand? because that will be able to delete W7 rc off you partition.

Whoa, wait. You named the partition the letter *B*?

Not D, E, F, or anything like that, but *B*?

As for not being able to format the drive and whatnot, well, not from a normal CMD - you'll need to run CMD as administrator to be able to do that, IIRC. but GParted will allow you to delete that one partition completely (although that will also require a reinstall of W7 as the original partition named C will also contain the boot files needed to boot both OSs).

I suspect, however, that naming your latest partition *B* is causing you part of the problem - as B is normally reserved for floppies and what not....and Unfortunately, I am not sure if simply changing the drive letter will work, as (if I remember correctly) Win 7 should be seeing that as your B drive when you load it (and so should Win 7 beta, if it loads) but WLM may be hardcoded to install to C:\Program Files, so it may be installing to to the other HD, but as soon as it runs it tries to save your info to the right installation (B) only to not find anything there....

The full windows live instalation is in B. Don't worry.

But why worry about it being reserved for Floppies, no one uses them anymore.
Atleast I do not. And I have tried running CMD as administrator, but that did not work either.

And why will I need to re-install windows 7 AGAIN, if i get rid of that partition? This seems pretty stupid. They ask me to install Windows 7 again, as an RC, but i cant write it over my beta, and i cant update my beta to the RC, so i am FORCED to write it onto a new partition, but I cant delete the old one? Seems bunko to me.

I do not know why you were unable to upgrade your Beta (unless you attempted to perform a new (as in clean) install on the same partition without first wiping it out using the partition tool in the W7 setup. Also, if you did not run W7 setup from *inside* your beta install, you get no option to upgrade.

I have a strong feeling that the drive letter used is still causing the problem - I am not saying it could not install -0 I am saying that somehow, somewhere, WLM is making a reg call for whatever reason to try to either write a file or read a file and it is doing so in the wrong location b/c the location is hardcoded to look in C instead of whatever your current system drive is.

For example - does WLM work in your Beta install?

And as for installing RC again - well, you see, W7 uses a boot partition of roughly 100 MB in size to store boot info - so if you currently are present with a menu and have to pick 7 Beta and 7 RC, then you'll probably be fine, except that the 7 Beta won't exist anymore once you get rid of the C: partition. However, if you wipe the drive clean and start from scratch, or remove that 100 MB partition in the front, you have effectively killed booting any W7 partitions on the hard drive - thus requiring a reinstall.

Let's go back to troubleshooting why W7 would not upgrade and why you cannot remove the beta partition - I need *specific* answers here, not vague ones - exact error messages (screen shots if available would help, and W7 has the built in snipping tool to make that pretty easy - see How to use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums for details (it applies here as well - the forums are identical) and we can go from there.

Seeing as the only thing really different between your new install and my new install is your drive letter, at least for now, I have to explore the possibility that that is in fact the cause of it.

I'm pretty sure the reason that you couldn't upgrade your W7 Beta to RC was because Microsoft has disabled it.
I remember reading in the instructions to NOT upgrade and do a fresh install.

I also have the windows live crash issue. For me it only crashes on logon, I can go and start it from the 'Start' menu with no problems. it'll sign on fine and works fine until the next reboot.
