This happened after Service Pack 1 was installed. The printer will detect and install drivers over the network and through USB just fine using Windows update. However, I need the scanner to work, and it won't work unless I use the HP full feature software installation package from HP. I've tried various versions of the package and even tested the installation files on another computer (nothing wrong with the files). It always allows me to pick what to install, where, etc... during installation but when the HP installer starts to actually install the software, it just disappears, progress bar and all. The process just ends at the same point every time.

BTW, the software is for an HP Photosmart D110 series printer/scanner, but that's probably irrelevant, as the software package installs fine on other computers.

Firewall is off (not disabled, but off), no antivirus clients at all, and no remnants of any previously-installed clients (I used removal tools to ensure this). It HAS to be some damaged component in Windows, but I've tried chkdsk and sfc /scannow to no avail. Are there any repair procedures I've overlooked? System restore is not an option, as there are no restore points available. Perhaps there is a way to repair the SP1 install?

I've gone through a plethora of googled pages, but very few people have ever reported having this problem, and none have found solutions, save an OS reload.

Thanks.

Problem solved. I had to disconnect from the internet and tell the HP software to NOT look for updates to the installation package, as it was crashing as it "applied updates" every time. Once I did this, the installation claimed that it needed to restart the computer in order to continue the installation, at which point it continued the installation with no problems. As of now, it scans perfectly over the network and through USB.

Good to hear you solved the issue and for letting us know, it may be helpful.
You should have some AV installed, no PC is an island. Try MS Security Essentials, there's a link in my sig. :)

The next poor soul that has the same issue installing their D110 printer finds make very relevant! :D I thought I was going insane, it would be happily doing its thing then: "poof" No indication of what happened, only caught it because I was staring right at it the final time. So, thank you very, very much!! I only had to google this problem 2-3 times before "disappear" found this! NOTE: I have installed it many times on Win 7 SP1 and first time it happened...so, guess maybe updates that came out today effected it. Hopefully this will move answer up for others to find!
