No contest, any i3 or i5 will pretty much eat a Pentium D's breakfast, lunch and dinner regardless of clock speed.

It depends on what i5 and 17 you are talking about. What are the numbers behind the i5 and i7, and are you talking about the new versions such as the i5-2500K or are you talking about the first gen, i5's? The first generation i5's have 2 cores up to the i5-750 which has 4 cores. The number of cores in the i7 depend on which i7 you are asking about. The best way to answer your wuestions is for you to look at the processors. Here are the 1366 CPU's and here are the 1156 CPU's. Look the ones up you are looking for and the details will answer your questions. Here are the newer 1155 Cpu's.

CPUs are not always ranked up by their speeds. the Sandy Bridge CPUs are much newer and have Hyperthreading

The Pentium Dual Core CPUs are obsolete and weaker than the modern CPUs

Its just a CPU with 4 Cores at 2.0Ghz
The number of cores is irrelevant to the CPU clock speed

No. It has 4 cores and each one runs at 2.0. The whole CPU runs at 2.0.

No they are never added together. It is a dual or quad core with each core running at whatever speed they are designed to run at.

There were a few ebay scams that used to try and pull that a few years ago (and likely still are) where they would list a 2.4 GHz quad core as a 9.6 GHz cpu.

Actually I can understand his confusion as I see ebay adds and in other places where they will call a quad a 6 or 8 ghz whatever fits because of the multiple cores.

...This is wrong however as everyone has been pointing out to you. It's not cumulative. The processor frequency is the same regardless of number of cores.

I think everyone has answered the same way, just explained different. If it is listed as a 2.0 CPU, the number of cores does not matter. 2.0 is the speed of the CPU.

Go to qo to a website like Newegg, look up the CPU you are intrested in and click on the detail section. It should explain all you need to know. If you are talking about the 2nd gen. core i5, I believe they are all 4 cores. If you are talking about the 1st Gen. i5's I believe they are 2 cores up to the i5-750 which is 4 cores. any number above 750 is 4 cores. I believe all that info to be correct, but you can check it out in the above link.
