Microsoft tries to make Windows 7 easier to open

Microsoft is trying to make Windows 7 easier than Windows Vista on many levels--right down to the box it comes in.

One of the many criticisms of Windows Vista was the incredibly complex packaging that Microsoft used for both Vista and Office 2007. In an effort to prevent theft and piracy, Microsoft created boxes that required their own set of instructions to open.
In a blog posting on Wednesday, Microsoft said it will use a package that is shaped similarly to the Vista one. However, the box will open more like a standard DVD case.
The case, which will be recyclable, will contain just the disc and a getting started guide. Overall, Microsoft said it reduced the packaging weight by 37 percent.
Microsoft plans to start selling Windows 7 on October 22, although pre-sales of the product as well as a free upgrade program for new PC buyers are expected to both kick off on Friday.

for those who don't have opposable thumbs thumbs (irony), windows will now be distributed in a bland, boring case that will not entertain at all while you install it. back to you, in the news room.

well thats a relief. dont know how i'd manage to open the 'switchblade' box without some kind of detailed instruction sheet, with poorly drawn illustrations, and written in a language that i'll never be able to read (Aztecan?)......

I wonder how much money was spent on box devolpment and if they had beta testers working the bugs out lol.

Now you know why the full product ( without upgrade options and discounts) is so expensive....

I did find my Office 07 hard to open until I figured out what was going on with it

I was just about to post a similar account. I tried opening the Office 2007 box without looking for instructions, and couldn't open it. Found the instructions and popped it open in seconds.
