Restore point error

Well, I couldn't take a screenshot, there was no toolbar. Here is what the two compatability errors said:

Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade.

Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can me made before continuing.

If I understand correctly, it looks to me like the last sentence is telling you to restart so "necessary changes to system files can be made", before the repair can continue.

At any rate, start a new thread in the installation section. You don't need to give the entire background of this issue. Just state that you have little experience and want to do a repair install. Quote the error message you got, just like you did in this thread.

Do you have Service Pack 1 installed??

Find out by going to "system" in control panel.

What does it say there under "Windows Edition"??

Well, I ran the repair install which was quite easy, took a while, so I took a nap. I still have the exftspyse there and I can't determine if I have a restore point working because there aren't any. I do believe I had #5 done correctly, but I checked it now and there is no service pack 1 installed. So I don't know what it did, but it is still working.

Can you now make a restore point?

I think exftspyse is some sort of anti-virus program. Is it bothering you and do you want to get rid of it?

Have any of your other problems stopped?

I made a restore point and it worked. I also want to get rid of the little icon with my name in it right before it goes to windows. I have to click on it for it to open. Yes the softspy bothers me. I have googled it and I guess it is bad. I have tried to uninstall it and it won't go away. It said to remove what you could manually and I did. It now says it doesn't have enough something or other to run. I wrote to the company to ask them how to remove it but they havent answered.

How did it get on your PC?

I assume it no longer appears in your list of installed programs and cannot be further uninstalled from control panel/programs and features?

Is all of your data intact and do all of your programs appear to be working?

Did the repair install solve anything?

It is still on the list of installed programs and I hit uninstall and it says it is, but it isn't. It is missing compnents to work. I installed it for some reason I read about. I want it gone along with the icons of the my name when I first sign on. I would look it up, but I don't know what you call it. I think it has something to do with administrator and I had the option of putting in a password but I didn't. The computer looks great, all the programs are working and I have made 2 restore points and they work. Under shadow copy is says manual and won't stay running, but I just have to check it is on automatic. Why won't it stay running?

Clarify this.

Where are you seeing "shadow copy"?? What are you looking at and how did you get there? You shouldn't see "shadow copy" when you make a restore point or attempt a restore.

ignat - when I couldn't get restore point one of the techs on "just answer" said to check the shadow copy. I got there by services.exe. Hmmm - now all I see is Shadow explorer, shadow copy isn't even there. Is that allright? I got rid of the xsoft thing through theog. So outside of your question about shadow copy, all is good.
Do you know how to get rid of the icons at the beginning when you reboot. I often reboot and leave the room. Now I have to stay to click on them. I think it has to do with administrator stuff that I had to do to do the repair install.

You should stay out of services as a rule.

You do not need to go to services to do a system restore or make a restore point.

I'm not sure about your icon issue. It sounds like something related to passwords and logging in.

You might start another thread about that specific issue.

It is hard to understand your issues because of the lack of screen shots in your posts. A picture is worth more than a thousand words. I'd recommend you learn how to post pictures of what you are looking at so we can better understand exactly where you are.

You should also think about updating Windows through Windows Update. I'm guessing you are not now using Service Pack 1.

Now that you know how to do a repair install, you should have enough confidence to do a clean install if you ever have to.

A clean install though requires intalling your programs and all the stuff you downloaded and bookmarked. I would love to do it, but am afraid to, especially since it is working now. I can't post a picture of the icons at the start because the start menu isn't up yet.

You could start a thread about the icons thing, probably in General Discussion.

Keep on top of your backups.

Resist the urge to fiddle unnecessarily.

Keep Windows updated, at least for updates marked "important" or "critical". You should get Service Pack 1.

Make sure your antivirus and antimalware applications are running and updated.

Stay out of the registry and services.

Hang around here and read tutorials and try to upgrade your knowledge gradually over time.

You're doing fine. Good job on the repair install.

Thanks so much, you have given me confidence. I do have to stay away from "fixing" things. The red flag on the bottom right keeps telling me to check my antivirus, but I have avast and it is fine and up to date, so I don't know.
Also, you said install Service Pack 1. I did update windows, it took a while, but it doesn't say Service Pack 1. I went to tutorials and all it had there was people with problems of it not installing. I didn't see directions on how to install it. Thanks so much.

Not sure about your anti-virus red flag, but I would get to the bottom of it. You might try a post in the anti-virus section.

You could always uninstall it and instead install Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and highly regarded. Keep Malware Bytes.

Some people have trouble installing Service Pack 1 through Windows Update.

But you can instead download it and then install it directly from your hard drive, bypassing Windows Update.

To learn if Windows 7 SP1 is already installed

Click the Start button, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

If Service Pack 1 is listed under Windows edition, SP1 is already installed on your computer.

If it is NOT installed, you can download it here:

I think you have to go through a "validation" process at that link.

You will see about 10 files in the list.

You need ONLY the last one:

windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe 537.0 MB

Download it and run it just like any other installation.

Probably a good idea to make a restore point before you run it. That might happen automatically anyway.

OK, thanks. Where I get into trouble is when my computer gets slow and sluggish. I go back to these forums and they give me these tutorials to optimize ur computer and I do them all hoping my computer will speed thngs up. When I first got this thing and when I put windows 7 on it - it just sang, it was great. Wish you could keep it that way. What do you do when your computer gets slow that is safe?
