Solved Win 7 12 GB verses 24 GB x64 bit

Has anyone went from say 12 GB to 24 GB in Windows 7 x64 bit? Was there any difference? What did you notice? I understanf at this point Windows 7 x64 will only use 16 GB. Would you do it again after doing it?

Any help and comments are appreciated! Thanks.

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 has a limit of 16GB of RAM.

Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise will take up to 192 GB of RAM.

Unless you're running a ton of VMs, or doing some pretty intensive video editing, I don't think there's much noticeable difference going from 12 to 24 GB in a desktop machine.

Unless it's doing heavy disk I/O, which will increase the amount of RAM that can be allocated to disk cache if/when it backs up on the HDD. If there's an SSD in there, however, even that becomes a moot point.

Not unless you are running VM's. It's the only thing that I would use that could possibly make use of that kind of RAM. For nearly everybody 4GB is fine, 8GB for those who run VM's. Anything more than that, really needs to be quite specialized. I run VMWare servers with 32GB, 64GB, and 96GB of RAM...but those are used to run 20-50 simultaneous VM's.

The amount of RAM really depends on the application you are using. In my job, I use a specialist bit of software that does a very specialist job - this is certainly not the usual run-of-the-mill stuff. In this case, the software appears to handle as much RAM as I can throw at it. Essentially, I am opening up several instances of the software, and running them in parallel/similtaneously.

Currently, my normal PC's have 24GB, and I have one PC that I have tested 48GB on RAM on, and also 72GB of RAM - Windows 7 Professional x64 handles all of this very nicely.

Hello all and many thanks for all your response. Yes, after I saw the memory price drop I added another 12 Gig for a total of 24 Gig. No, absolutely no it was not a night and day difference but I do see an improvement in boot time and in some processing. It was 75 for 12 Gig and now I have everything matching so I feel that it was worth it rather than do it later and not have matching Ram. Again, thanks for all your input.

Thanks for posting the follow up. I'm really surprised that you see an improvement in boot times. If anything, i could see it slowing a bit as there is more RAM to initialize during the POST.

I would have to think that's more of a placebo effect anyway. It should take longer to initialize all that memory. But I'll also agree, it's a pointless overkill on a desktop system...$75 that could have been spent elsewhere on components that would make a difference. I have 24 GB in a Dell PowerEdge R710, running 5 virtualized Windows 2008 R2 servers, with power and memory to spare.

I dunno'. That 12 GB extra is just about right for running Firefox Portable out of a Ram Disk.

I have 24 GB in a Dell PowerEdge R710, running 5 virtualized Windows 2008 R2 servers, with power and memory to spare.

We use PowerEdge R710's for all virtual servers at my shop as well. I have 4 of them running in a QA/DEV data center area with 24GB of RAM each. I'm averaging about 10-15 concurrent linux VM's on each one.

I've got a handful more R710's (about 8) running anywhere between 64GB and 98GB of RAM and hosting about 150 VM's.

I love these R710's. Quiet and cool. However, rebooting hosts with 64 or 98GB of RAM takes about 2 minutes just to initialize the RAM and there is no BIOS option to quick boot 'em either. So, a reboot takes about 3-4 minutes.
