Available Ram varies widely

Windows 7
16 gb ram
Dual Xeon

I noticed that under the same conditions:
• Fresh rstart
• No programs running

The available Ram displayed in Task manager varies widely from approximately 13,750 to 10,750.

Why is there such a wide variation in available Ram. Is there a way to reclaim ram when it is getting low.

Ram is important when I am recording digital audio with large sample libraries.

I'd guess it varies because at any given moment Windows is doing different things on its own, regardless of what applications you have personally started. You could take a look at processes to try to get a better idea.

Windows is pretty sharp at memory management and will likely make it available to other applications as necessary.

Do yourself a favor. Close Task Manger. Do not open it until you have a problem. You have way to much RAM to babysit it. When an application needs a lot of RAM, Windows will give it all the RAM it needs. You do NOT need to concern yourself with it. It is smart enough to handle it all without you.
