Sandy Bridge-E Benchmarks Leaked: Disappointing Gaming Performance?

Just a handful of days ahead of Sandy Bridge-E's launch, a Chinese tech website, www.inpai.com.cn has done what Chinese tech websites do best and that's leak benchmarks and slides, Intel's NDA be damned. They pit the current i7-2600K quad core CPU against the upcoming i7-3960X hexa core CPU and compare them in several ways. The take home message appears to be that gaming performance on BF3 & Crysis 2 is identical, while the i7-3960X uses considerably more power, as one might expect from an extra two cores.

I posted the article, but it is way to early to say these CPUs are a bust. We can't even confirm the tests, and this was about gaming. 2 extra cores, in real world, and other synthetic benchmarks may well greatly impress. I doubt they will be a bust, but they may not be better then the previous choices. In fact, the likely lower prices on the previous CPU's may make them more attractive. It will all depend on how they perform in the areas that you use your PC most. A Guy

I know it is early but it feels like what happen to Bulldozer... and we all know where that went. I hope it's not a bust.

Yep. Speculation is largely moot at this point until all the real world testing - end users, not reviewers, is in.

Synthetic benchmarks are largely meaningless to me. Day to day anecdotal evidence carries much more weight.

Bulldozer was different - the masses were expecting a magic CPU that didn't happen. x79, not as much expectation.

Still looking towards the 2600/2700k build but ... I must admit I am tempted
Quite expensive in comparison, and doesnt seem theres really any gain over SB for gaming.

The only 'real gains' X79 I can see for gaming is multi-gpu / Eyefinity/Surround with the full x16 lanes.

Core wise - 99% of games now, and in the realistic future aren't going to utilize more than 4 cores. Power hungry bugger by comparison too.

It's nice - but I don't regret going 'mainstream' with 1155. For now...
