Computer won't shut down, screen just turns off.

Turns out all my problems were an aged battery, according to the tech shop who reinstalled windows after some deeprooted viruses. But now my laptop won't shut down all the way, but the screen turns off. The keyboard's LEDs stay on, and the fan keeps blowing. It stayed that way for at least five minutes, between me getting a snack and coming back. I don't know if they reinstalled from the disc that shipped with the laptop or gave me a knew windows 7, but this particular issue only started when they reinstalled the OS.

I had a similiar situation. Solved by setting the power options on my Lan adapter cards. Could also be USB devices. I suggest you call up device manager and sort through devices that have power options.

Alright but I'm stumbling in the dark here. What ones should I look at?

just type in ' power options ' in the bottom search and click on that option

check how long it takes for your screen to turn off... default setting for this is very quick to turn screen off, also go into ' advanced '

Also check power button is not set to sleep or hibernate, if you want it to shut down fully make sure it is like the screen grab

Power Off

You need to go thru the power settings as Jay suggested.

here is the settings in device manager:

In the start menu select control panel, right click device manager and run as administrator. Is there any yellow triangles. If so there is a problem with that driver.
scroll down thru devices to Network adapters. Expand and select an adapter. Double click the adapter for properties. In the properties window select the power management tab. The box for (Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power) should be checked. Do this for all adapters.
The same procedure should done for Universal Serial Bus controllers. Do each one to find any that has a power tab

Some good advice given here so you should get to the bottom of it, I bet the guys who installed the windows 7 again just left everything on default settings, its like starting all over again to tweak everything to your liking.

alright i set the power options and checked all the network and USB adapters, everything that should be checked was checked. I'm not going to try shutting down unless my Maya installer wants me to reboot, because I'm a little behind on work. But if that doesn't work, anything else I should look at?

Stubborn Problem

It will just take some time to find it.

This problem can have many root causes. It takes some work to discover exactly what the cause is.
Prior to a shutdown call up task manager and see what is running. Make sure there is no apps running. I would also check processes tab and look them over,
If you see something that is running that you question kill the process and try a shut down.
Boot in to safe mode and see if the rig will shut down from there. If it will shutdown from safe mode. You should be able to find the culprit.
Since the computer hasn't always been like this try to remember when it changed and what changes you made prior to the shutdown problem.
Click start --> run and type shutdown -f -s -t 0 (last character is zero)
See if that shuts it down. Some of these steps should sooner or later yield a clue to what the problem is.
I don't know if you have ever used msconfig.exe but you may need to learn.
Type msconfig.exe in the start search box and when it comes up you will see that you can control what starts on a boot. On the start up tab you un check things to keep them from starting. Do a few at a time and you may find the problem.

took a look at the XP troubleshoot page, none of the problems on there were what's going on with me. if it helps, i actually recorded the shutdown process. sorry for the small frame and the messy desktop and the wobbles. I don't think a screen capture would really work that well for shutting down. also, the light source to the right is my second monitor

Win 7

It appears to me Win is shutting down. That means there is a harware glitch some where.
Did You try this to see what happens? Click start --> run and type shutdown -f -s -t 0 (last character is zero)

tried. didn't work. even waited through a show and a half, LEDs stayed on.

Shutdown works in safe mode, going to cross-check services and processes in safe vs normal modes when i have some time.

Alright I have a screenshot of my task manager from startup, and a hijackthis. Anything look iffy? Kaspersky and Malwarebytes can't find anything wrong.
