As fseal correctly pints out, people are accustomed to being allowed to purchase third party software for their desktops. But that was the blog author's point. Mobile phones have always had limitations on what you can install; desktops have more choices. The author argues that if MS actually goes through with this, it will hurt sales of Windows 8.

I'm with jimbo re metal detectors - had to a have a giggle cos the girls at work are just like that every spare second they have - usually showing those awful party, weddings, and grandkid photos off.

Don't get me wrong as my grandson Nick is the only star in the sky but the endless and monotonous way they carry on is driving me mad!

ICit2lol, I agree that after you've seen several thousand wedding photos, you've seen them all. But my sister's are an exception.

Our older sister was furious because she was not the center of attention, so every photo with her in it has her glaring in rage at the camera. They are DEFINITELY the funniest wedding pictures I have ever seen.

I put Windows 7 on this computer brand new right out of the box-both the computer and the os. I have NEVER seen it lock up, have NEVER had to force a reboot, and have done, watched, listened to and played anything and everthing i have wanted on this machine. Zero problems! I do not care about fluff or features...I care about performance. MS got this one right...it will be hard to get me to move on.

Our first computer had Windows 3.11. We couldn't believe the fantastic technology. You could actually play Solitaire by dragging the cards.

The computer industry is going in a wacky direction, infact it appears to be going backwards. You don't even need a power horse PC to do what you use to need 8 or more years ago. Dual Core CPU are still powerful to do most tasks today. Intel and AMD are turning out chips that don't seem to get the interest as they use to in the past, I'll give credit to AMD as they chips are cheaper but how effective their 8-cores chips are for me personally doesn't make me want to jump hurdles. Intel price point is so high that they have literally decided to ignore most of their chips lines and focus on Atom and lower end CPU market where they can sell more and put the expensive chips on a shelf where the spiders rest.

Desktops are not dead, but are dying at a slow rate. Internet on your mobile phone is gaining over desktop use. Most people are using their mobile phones for internet rather then coming home and sitting at a PC for hours. You can check your email etc where ever you are with a mobile phone, eating, on public transportation etc is this a good thing, that is a different subject.

Microsoft wants to reinvent them self they want to go away from the "Start" button with a entire new interface aka "Metro" look. Is this a U.I that speaks down to you many are saying yes. Many say the MacOS speaks down to you the only OS that still doesn't completely speak "down" is Linux although Android does.

Cloud computing was hyped as this amazing new thing -- turns out it's just a cash grab for the companies to run software on the net and charge you monthly fees to keep the software running, even if installed locally, but they are pushing cloud computing on us hard to accept it.

As I said in the beginning the computer industry is going a direction that is backwards. It is not progress thinking anymore, and it is a warning light. If their is no more progress thinking and it's becoming strictly about money which it is, then where is computers heading. There will always be programmers, they need them but your average PC user may in 5 years from now probably will have a mobile phone and a tablet.

Not this bunny Jerome as I have said in past posts thats ok IF you like them and IF you have the eyesight to see them. Personally I think they are great time wasters and particularly at work and with young kids.

But I agree wholeheartedly what you said re chips I think one would have to more money than sense to buy some of the Intel high end chips now - probably very nice to have but to what end?

For me four cores is the go and well six a bit better but not necessary. The cloud all a bit of over done hype if you ask me, and I want my data here back on earth not in some theoretical repository.

Ah yes I'm very much looking forward to purchasing W7 Ultimate family pack for a deep discount as W8 hits.

Looks like we're in the same boat...although I am wanting only 7-Pro... Ultimate? Meh--unnecessary for my needs.

But truly hoping MS doesn't keep the price high to prevent users from choosing based on economics. That would be horrible.

Windows 8 Dev Pre is running on one of my machines. I like it--mostly. I don't like the difficulty I've experienced installing drivers; continued "Access Denied" errors aren't cool when you know what you're doing. It seems they may move closer to the Apple spectrum with 8. I hope I'm wrong, and that it's just the developer preview, but if I'm not, I'll be using Windows 7 for a very, very long time.

My original idea was to hold off upgrading all of my machines until Windows 8 released. More than happy to buy it. I like how Microsoft is doing a lot more in regards to user experience. The Metro Start Panel/Menu is awesome. The continued updates to news, stocks, weather, etc. is entertaining and informative. It gives a reason to sit in front of the computer a little longer.

If the app store is functional and useful, it should be an enjoyable product. I am admittedly a bit leery of the remote-delete capability of Microsoft in this regard, but if it's limited only to applications installed through the app store, it will be a serious asset.

Either way, Windows 7 absolutely fits the bill. It's stable, smooth, very functional for beginners and experts, and extremely secure. I recommend it to all of my clients, friends, and family members. From Aero Snap to Resource Monitor, Microsoft truly out-did themselves.

The only possible way I could see myself upgrading as soon as 8 drops is if the price is extremely competitive... Sell it for $45 as an upgrade from Windows 7 and you've got a deal... As a matter of fact $45 for Home Premium $60 for Professional, and $75 for Ultimate, and it's definitely a deal!

You make some good points, Jerome. I had a Cloud account that I liked, but the company folded. I have another free one that I use to store some important data, but it's hard to do anything else with it.

Whatever happened to the usual SP2 and SP3 modus-operandi of Micro$oft???

Oh, I forgot... they're more interested in printing money now... hence they're charging as much for an OS that now lasts three years as they were for XP, which rolled on for nearly a decade before they rushed out Vista - much to Steve Jobs amusement at the time...

Personally I'd like to see them learn to walk before they try to run. There are a great deal of improvements they could make to various Windows components - many of which are long overdue, and won't necessarily be made in the next incarnation of their OS...

Well apple was making a new version that cost over $100 EVERY YEAR there for quite a while. :/

MS is not nearly that bad. Not by a long shot.

Besides, there's generally no real reason to upgrade any working machines. New OSes come in with regular equipment replacement for the most part. I'd rather see them moving forward than just getting stuck in the past forever like XP was towards the end there

I agree with you fully. Windows 7 lost a stability feature that was built into Windows XP (speaking specifically of the way usb audio drivers are handled). It would be nice to see a Service Pack that addresses this issue fully.

This recently dawned on me. I finished slipstreaming updates into a build of Windows 7 to install, and I realized, this is the last time I'm probably ever going to do this. I've spent two years keeping my install build up to date to reduce update time in Windows, and this is the last one. It was odd.

I'm looking forward to Windows 8, it has such potential to do greatness.
