Windows XP sp3.. freezing after updating Malwarebytes yesterday

Did you find the XP disk? What does it say on it?

It appears the Gateway is a 500x Media Center, but shipped with either XP Home Premium or Professional. Nothing is mentioned in specs about XP Media Center Edition. Do you know which version XP you have?

Try booting the disk and navigate through the menus as shown in this tutorial to see if it offers the second Repair option which is a Repair Install: XP Repair Install - Part 1 of 2

Greg gm.. I'm looking right at the disc in my hand'

Gateway OPERATING SYSTEM Windows XP Professional Media Center
Version 1.0

also this disc tells me, on the circle around the center is white with this info.
7513249 SWR WIN PRO MED CENT ED RO 11/O2

There is another disc that is Red with the drivers on it, that must be installed First before doing anything else

In my humble opinion this was manf. 11/02 ??

There's a chance this CD will run a Repair Install for you, LPT. Follow the steps in the link XP Repair Install to see.

If not we'll need to help you find the CD ISO online to burn to disk and run the Repair Install.

Were you able to open the Task Manager before it freezes on the desktop using Control Alt Delete? If so you might be able to get control of the Desktop enough to System Restore or uninstall problem program.

Gerg if I can manage to get the Task Manager up.. what will I be looking for on it ??..
Which tab do I need to open ??..
when I find it.. what do I do after highlightening it ??
I do recall there are a lot of things on it.,, and the MB is very fast to load

Did you try these suggestions yet?

Try booting again to the F8 Advanced Boot Options to look for "Last Known Good Config" and choose it.

When you get to Desktop see if you can press Control Alt Delete to open the Task Manager, End Now any Applications that are running, or on Processes tab look for Malwarebytes or any other process hogging CPU to End Process.

That would be the Applications and Processes tabs in Task Manager. You can Stop any Services which you think might be hanging XP on Services tab.

You want to kill the Program or Process which is hanging the PC, often revealed by clicking the CPU column heading to see what Process is hogging CPU.

LPt,
Once hitting Control/alt/delete a box should come up.
Click on Start task manager which open this snip picture with tabs at the top.

I think Greg may want you to stop MBAM services.....I think..
Wait till he comes back on and guide you.

LPT, if you want, you may try another alternative.

When you open your computer in safe mode, at first a lot of lines will pass through your eyes for a few minuted .... it's normal .

After a few minutes, you will get your safe mode desktop ... all black with white and big fonts ... it's also normal.

Apart from the looks, it will work almost usual. You may follow two alternatives as per my suggestion.

First, click on start button in the safe mode desktop, click on "control panel" at the right side of the start menu, then, in the control panel window, open "add or remove programs". It will open in a new window showing a list of all the programs installed. select malwarebytes anty malware , you will see a button "Remove" at the right corner of the selection. Press the button and follow the instructions to remove it; it will uninstall the program from your computer.

Second, Click on the start button on the safe mode desktop, then All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. You will see a radio button "restore my computer to an earlier time" click on it, if it is not selected, and press next. Choose a date earlier than the mishap, then click next . It will guide you to a restoration which should solve your issue.

If These failed, What Greg is leading you to a repair install must must work .

Best of your luck !

I hope you all know I've been working here almost non stop to get some results from your posts.
I have STARTED THIS PC NUMERIOUS TIMES.. TRYING TO GET IT INTO SAFE MODE OR
GET THE TASK MANAGER UP TO USE IT.. SO FAR, AS SOON AS THE MB APPEARS.. EVERYTHING IS FROZEN..EVEN THE START BUTTON WILL NOT FUNCTION..AT THAT POINT.

I'VE DONE EVERYTHING I CAN AT THIS POINT. Now my monitor won't function.. so I can't see anything,
I've been trying to get it to work.. during my absence in here.

As soon as I can get the monitor to stay on.. I'll keep trying.
I'm totally multi- tasking all day ... shutting the pc off, rebooting to get into SAFE MODE..
even so, unless the monitor works I can see anything yet.
I'll keep trying.. will let you know as soon as possible.

OK.. I had the pc in SAFE mode.. chose the Last Good Confg..>>> hit enter..
then the Welcome screen appared..>>>> then the desktop, with all my shortcuts and other items..
I did get to click on Start >> All programs.. got to System Tools then it froze.. had to do a hard down again.

Don't I need to try to get the TASK Manager up and STOP that MB program first?
maybe that will work better.

Did Last Known Good Config buy you any more time to work in the Desktop before it froze? If so, try it again (it may need an earlier restore point) and then immediately press Control-Alt-Delete to get into Task manager to shut down any running Applications, kill Processes hogging CPU, or turn off the Service you suspect is responsible. It may take several stabs at it to kill the beast.

Sometimes Task Manager will open when desktop freezes. If not reboot and try Last Known again.

LPT, this will not solve your current situation, but I wanted to relate what I went through.

I looked through your thread, and saw the reference to XP, and MBAM and the trouble your having with your XP OS, and updating MBAM.

On my XP Pro SP3 machine I went to upgrade to the new version today (1.60.0.1800) through the program, and it generated a program crash report. Task manager could not end it because it was not listed.

I then un-installed it, downloaded a fresh copy, re-installed, and it generated the same report.
Researched "Mbam xp crash" Found this: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=103207

I finally just removed it, and will wait until MBAM figures it out.

Interesting coincidence, Anak. LPT seems to be pretty sure Malwarebytes is connected to this hang. We only see good Malwarebytes performance in Win7 but since this is XP it may need to be rooted out.

See if you can kill the Malwarebytes Service in Task Manager Services tab first thing, then kill any running Processes related to MB.

Perhaps one of the Malwarebytes developers here will help with a line command to run from booted XP CD Repair console to kill it's processes altogether if this fails.

Since you refer to it being in your System Tray, do you have the paid Real Time Shield?

Anak...I went to MalwaREBYTES FORUM, Registered, I DID NOT GET TO REPORT MY ISSUE,
I did read tons of reports from others, who had all kinds of issues with MB and Zone Alarm..
I'VE ALWAYS .. USED BOTH.
I didn't get the reporting you did, most had the freezing problem, ZoneAlarm seems to have been effected also or it may have been part of the problem.
