His ping rate should be fine because the machine is up and connected. It`s the nics connection lag at startup that`s the issue.

I wouldn`t install any drivers to the nic other than letting windows do it then trying to update it through device manager.

Exactly.
They should be basically identical in both directions.
If they aren't ...

It's easy to setup a network that only pings correctly in one direction (WAN, maybe not a home network).
I've done it stacks of times in my Networking course.
I should point of that is using a network simulator (it's never happened using hardware).

It could be:

• A simple typo somewhere in the configs
• An issue with the router.

For example, the router seems to have a dynamic address.
On my course we always set static addresses for WAN routers, servers and LAN Gateways.

I'm not stating that this is responsible for the OP's problem.

I shutdown machine A and unplugged its cable in order to use it in B, since this new cable that I was using on B was an unknown. Then I reset the router using the pinhole button on the back and let it re-initialize. Then I did two consecutive boots on B. Here are the results.

Boot1 - ip = 192.168.1.69, with 192.168.1.64 as invalid
Boot2 - ip = 192.168.1.69, with 192.168.1.65 as dynamic

I do not know what 64 and 65 are.

Based on your earlier screenshots:

• Dad's IP address = 192.168.1.64
• Albert's IP address = 192.168.1.69

Dad's ARP table should have an entry for Albert (192.168.1.69) which it does.
Albert's ARP table should have an entry for Dad (192.168.1.64) which it does.


If you are certain that nothing is using 192.168.1.65, try deleting the rogue 192.168.1.65 entry.
Create a "System Restore" point to be on the safe side (or backup HDD image).

Using the "Command Prompt":

arp -d 192.168.1.65

naturally now 192.168.1.65 has disappeared. I'll try a couple of reboots to see if it comes back. I did just run an sfc /scannow and it said it found problems and was able to fix "some of them". I looked in the log but it was gigantic and nothing stood out. Nevertheless the delay is still there at bootup. Can anyone explain what the section is that is called starts with 0.0.0.0 ---- 0xfffff ? I'm getting close to reloading win7 on this machine....

That always happens when you are trying to fix some problem.

That's strange.
One of your MAC addresses has changed (Albert).
It was:
00-24-21-eb-21-06
Now it's:
00-24-21-eb-21-07

I wonder if your NIC is dodgy.
Are you sure it is properly seated in its socket (or are you using a built-in NIC, i.e. on the MB)?

Are you certain that there are only 2 machines connected to your router?
You don't have any wireless devices (e.g. a laptop) connecting to your router (assuming it handles wireless of course).

Since you are using DHCP, the IP addresses may change/swap when you reboot your machines.
Try setting static addresses on your PCs.

Good question, you are connected to the motherboard yes ? I thought you would have mentioned if indeed you had 2 nics. Excuse me my brain`s startn to hurt. Configured toooo many laptops today.

I started to wonder exactly that, so I went downstairs and found that there was a laptop which was connected wirelessly. My apologies to you good folks - my mistake. 64, 65, and 66 were being passed around between the three machines with all my restarting of the router and rebooting the two desktop machines.

but here is some good news. I just restarted B in safe mode and it connected to the internet instantly. But when I start in normal mode, even with msconfig>startup empty, I get that delay. Any thoughts on that? By the way I went through services.msc on both A and B and made some changes to B to make it more like A, but to no avail.

Did you turn off the laptop ? While the laptop is aquireing it slows down the process. How did you not know there was a laptop on ? ( the mystery .65 ? )
As mentioned it would be good to assign the pcs static ips. If you only have the 3 you should never have a problem. Although, they will use the same ips everyday anyway ( 24 hour lease ) it wouldn`t hurt to try. Not sure how to do it, just ask.

yes. no change to B delay in normal mode, and B connects instantly in safe mode with networking.

tried a few more things and here are the results:

- safe mode with networking using default tcpip settings: instant internet connection
- normal mode, static ip and static opendns server: instant internet connection
- normal mode, dhcp for ip, static opendns server: instant internet connection
- normal mode: default tcpip settings (automatic dhcp ip and dns): internet connection delay

so it looks like there is a dns hangup in normal mode that is not there in safe mode, and its not there on system A in any mode. Not sure what though......

Try flushing the DNS on the problem PC (using the "Command Prompt"):

ipconfig /flushdns

It seems like the key is that no matter what I do (use several startup programs, normal mode) as long as I set the dns server to be static there is no delay at all. Also safe mode no delay at all.

A have a shoebox full of em but Scotty tells me the Beamer will be down for quite some time.

I don`t know what else to try.
