Hello Paul. Welcome to Sevenforums!

Did you forget to put a password on your router?

First of all, thanx alot for your reply mate. Ive not set any passwords... But, im using MTNL Broadband in india... The Service Providers (MTNL) set passwords as the unique consumer no. of every customer in the modem settings page itself... That password cannot be changed, or the connection wont work... Does this mean that they are using my connection? Wot can be done?? Help?:(

In the modem or router? Do you have a router connected to your modem, and are you allowed to change the router's password?

There should be 2 passwords: 1 for your ISP, and 1 for your router. I've never heard of an ISP giving you a router and not letting you change the password, but I suppose it is possible.

The router should be the only way that anyone else can access your network, unless your computer itself is broadcasting a signal, but default is set to off for this setting.

I dont have a router... I have a wired broadband connection. Its connected via my landline phone... And Im aware of just two passwords...

1 that pops up as soon as i open the modem settings page (to view all the modem settings).

2nd one is inside the settings (thats my consumer number)

Hey, I happen to have the same problem as shown in the original post and I tried the solution given here but the option is unchecked yet the weird PC names in my network are still there... I've noticed that a few days ago, when I first saw the first PC connection it disappeared after I disconnected my internet for about a minute and a wireless device appeared instead (yet I have no router or anything of sorts, I have a broadband connection)

I'm under impression that I might me hacked but I strongly hope that's not the case... can you help me please?

Reya, welcome to Sevenforums!

:info:This thread has been marked "solved" for the other user, so people might not notice your problem for this old thread. But I will try to help you out best I can.

Most likely, you have not been hacked. You might have some form of malware, but hacking is completely different. Do check just in case you have malware. Update your antivirus scanner and do a "Full scan". If you are worried still about being infected, install malwarebytes free, which is excellent at detecting additional infections: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61 - TechSpot Downloads
:note:If you are really worried, and you notice strange things happening to your computer, run this tool if you can to remove malware: What is Windows Defender Offline?

After that, go to Network Sharing Center (type its name into your start menu search bar), and click "Change advanced sharing settings" on the far left. Make sure you are listed under "Home" (it is the first title you should see near the top), and make sure "Password protected sharing" is on.

Here is some info that you may find useful:
  1. People that are connected to your router (if you have one) may be visable to you. This may include other computers in the house, people you give your router password to, or people who connect without needing to enter a password. Make sure any router you have is password protected. If you do not know how to do this, this tutorial can help: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105015-wireless-security-how-protect-your-network.html - created by merkat106
:note:Note that a router is what is connected to your modem, which further is connected straight to the wall outlet via the network cable.
  2. If you have "Network discovery" on (in advanced sharing settings), you will be able to see other nearby people who are also broadcasting their computers. This helps to find networks, but also makes your computer, and others, visable. However, if password protected sharing is on, they cannot connect to your computer without its password. Make sure your user account is password protected.
I hope I've answered your question. If you are still having trouble, or have any other questions, please let me know and I may have an answer. Take care :)
