No, it's a plain Microsoft disc for the operating system. It's used (and important) not only for clean installs, but for repairing existing installs. I can't imagine not having one with a personal computer.

Lee you are very welcome. Glad you're back on track.
Now I gather that Win7 offers the facility to create a backup DVD which will burn an image of the system at that time (I suspect it's actually several discs required as there will be a lot of data). Might be worth considering, and best to make the discs ASAP as you have recovered before the HDD gets filled with other stuff.

I'm on it David and I'm taking all precautions by using the advice recently given to me about the vanilla discs.

That's the beauty. It works on any computer. So, if your computer is running Windows Home Premium x86, then that's the disc you want to download from under Media Refresh.

If you have SP1 installed, then download the one with SP1 built-in (media refresh). You always want to repair your OS with the same level as you have installed.

Going forward, if you ever need to do a clean install, you can use this disc as well. You have a valid license with your computer, so this is just the install media to go with it.

No ones fault, apart from mine, but had I known this information before, all my problems would've been resolved instantly!

That's why I feel everyone should have these discs. Unless it is a company-owned computer, support by an IT team, of course, the the IT staff would have the discs.

No. It's on a netbook and I don't have a USB DVD writer.

That's very interesting. I don't get an option to use USB memory. It just fails to detect DVD and nothing else is in the drop down menu.
According to acer, it will only write to optical disc....

I fixed mine by pressing alt and F10 while booting , that started the built in auto recovery, although my recovery disc kept sticking at the same point.
