Solved Repairing AVI file: replacement ~30x original

I am repairing files with VirtualDub, that are reported defective with messages similar to those in the attachment; for example orig 16.1MB, new 624MB.

I presume V'Dub behaves much like any similar utility, so hope someone can tell me why the vast increase in size, and secondly how it can be avoided? Thanks in anticipation.

I'm hardly an authority on virtualdub--but, have you looked at the video tab?

Do you have "full processing mode" checked?

If so, try it with "direct stream copy".

Thanks: I'll have a look with the next batch. If your guess is correct, how does such a massive size increase arise? 30x seems totally OTT.

I may have known the answer to that at one time, but have forgotten since I rarely use VirtualDub.

I don't need to "repair" AVI files. All I need is the ability to make simple edits without any loss in quality--no re-encoding. I use Machete Lite for that. It does all I need, but does not "repair"---I'm not sure what you mean by that.

@ignatzatsonic My aim is to make playable AVI files that had been accidentally lost because I forgot to backup prior to reinstallation of Windows. Most are OK but some have things like headers missing

@Shark007 I shall try it but am curious about the C++, being a newbie at what I'm doing. In particular how do I ensure a file that is approx the same size as the damaged one, set defaults to that purpose?

If I just use the repair function it stops with the useless "windows will seek a solution". Path to vlc and language are set.
