I guess the next best option is to recommend that people burn the WinPE DVD of free Macrium and make an image with that.

I have seen too many poor suckers that have no images, no restore points, no data backups and all their data is on the C partition. And when their system goes on the blink, they cry for help because they absolutely must recover those precious pictures of their grandchildren.

Yesterday I ran a class at my computer club and I asked the audience: " Who does not have an external disk ". Half of the people (of 27) raised their hand - and I raised hell with them, LOL. I sent them out to buy one asap and in 2 weeks we will practice imaging.

If you propose a live Linux CD for data recovery, they are usually very alienated because they never used Linux and a crash course on Linux is more work than to instruct them how to use Macrium.

The Macrium route sounds a good idea to me. I guess the students have a range of inclinations but given they are attending a computer club a little stretch might not hurt.

Well, what I will do is burn the discs for them (no need that everybody has to go thru the ordeal to download the WAIK for 2 hours). Then I will show them in class how to use it. Hopefully it will help them when they are in trouble.

I do this class a little differently. Instead of just teaching (where they forget 90% when they leave the room), I show them something and they have to immediately repeat it on their own laptop that everybody has in front of them.

That has proven to be a lot more efficient than the classic approach -> I teach, you sleep.

The subject are all across the system ranging from Desktop to Liberaries to Command prompt to Disk Management and the use of many of the programs we use all the time. Although the club has over 800 members, only a few are able to follow. So I ended up with 27
