Windows 7 home premium pretty sure it is an X64

Randomly shuts OFF not DOWN, then when upon restart (manually pushing the power button) it opens like normal put my login password in and it opens fine then reopens the last program running automatically.

I have a feeling I’m looking at a hardware problem,

I’m not that familiar with windows 7 at all, this is the wife’s computer. Just been lurking the site. I love my XP still

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you,
James

I’m at the office right now and when I get home I’m going to download the memtest.

She just informed to me that she was getting an error pop up every once in awhile about memory (while she is on her recipes website) and then explorer freezes.

I’m not sure of the exact error YET but I’m speculating a RAM issue.

Sorry for the random updates,

But she just called and told me about another thing the computer is doing. We just hooked this computer up to the web (live in rural America and now just getting internet). But since Friday, eveytime she actually shuts down the computer, (about once a day) while shutting down it goes into installing updates mode. And each time it has around 100-120 updates.
3 year old machine never been updated or on the web before.

I didnt even think about the auto update.

If you are connecting a 3 year old machine with zero updates to the web for the first time, you are probably already infected with something if you have done any sort of browsing before installing all of those updates. I would recommend downloading and installing an antivirus (such as Avira Avira Free Antivirus - Download) and MalwareBytes (Download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware 1.60.1.1000). Make sure you perform all necessary updates for the two products, restart your computer into safe mode (no networking), and run full scans with both of those. Have it clean up whatever it finds. Then restart into windows normally and download all of the necessary windows updates (do ZERO internet browsing during this time until you have all of the available updates done).

Auto updates would go a long way to explaining your problem.

Excellent advice there from FliGi7, which if followed should go some way in assisting the smooth running of the computer in question.

Will do thank you for posting them in a link too.
I’ll start downloading them as soon as I get home.
They I’ll run the memtests after all of the updates are good to go. Just for good measure.

PS loving this site, so much knowledge on this site. I’m a mechanic by trade but computers run thru my blood too.
my bro works for fujitsu (drives around the 4 state region fixing computers)and i would ask him these questions if he wasnt so hard to get ahold of.

What I would advise is to choose manual updates rather than automatic updating as it will reduce the chances of errors occurring if you install them in small batches rather than a whole big bunch all at once.

You may find the System Updates Readiness Tool may be needed also as it can help solve updating problems.

This is the link for the 64-bit version: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=3132

I don`t understand your problem. It`s going into hibernation just like it`s supposed to. And yes you will have to push the power button to resume.

And if you don`t install updates while your using the pc it will install them when you shutdown.
Perfectly normal.

no it is not hirernating, it shuts off while in use. on my computer when the computer is on a green bar is lit, and when it goes into hibernate the green light flashes non-stop and when it is off the light is off.
plus when you push the power button to turn it back on it goes through the whole boot process, just like it does when you turn it on after correctly shuting it down.

ok i'm at home on my lap top i had the wife just leave the computer alone almost all day. with her not using it but it running it never shut off, just went into hibernate, i woke it up, downloaded the avria program and the microsoft windiag. i looked at the memtest site and didnt know what version i needed so i'm going to do some research into that. i went to shut down the computer so i could restart in safe mode and it had 140 updates. as of (5:45pm central) iit has done 85 of the 140 and i started it at 4:35 time frame.

140 updates will take some time to download, install and configure.

As for Memtest, you want the x86 version for the 32-bit version of Windows or the x64 version for the 64-bit version of Windows.

well it is done with its scan, only one detection ( FantaMorph.dll ) i guess it could be worse.
Now it is time to run the memtests now.

i just ran microsoft essentials on this XP system, and found nothing, i'm now loading the Avira onto here too seems like a no frills strait to the point program, and i like that.

well i'm done messing with this windows 7, i've never in my life.

i'm just going to swipe this hard drive on the wifes computer and load XP into it. microsoft really doesnt want anyone messing with this OS, it is designed for the common moron to operate, but to mod it you have to be a guiness in computers it seems like, im not a moron and i'm not a guiness either, there for i'm lost with this thing.

i really do thank you all for the help...

on the bright side i've had the computer on for 4 hours and downoaded numerous programs, some 3 times now( windows memory diagnostics) and it has not shut down once.

Great. Make sure you configure Updates to download and install automatically from now on so you don't have to worry about it. Be sure to keep Avira up to date as well. You can configure it to run a daily job to download the latest updates. It might be a good idea to turn off MS Essentials as well since you don't need it when running Avira.
