Today, my son-in-law called round with a very belated birthday gift in the form of a 1/72 limited edition model of the de Havilland Sea Vixen FAW 2 in the markings of 899 Squadron embarked in the the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle in 1967.

It was in fact the last naval aircraft I ever worked on and it has immediately become one of my most treasured possessions.

It is number 283 of 750 and apparently has doubled in value since my son-in-law first put his name on the waiting list two years ago - not that I would ever sell it.

Yes, it is Gary. And all the more reason why I feel it was such a special gesture. I had no idea Stephen had ordered it until he turned up with it and even more remakable was the fact the rest of the family were in on the secret and no-one let on.

Jaidyn, I'm not quite sure why there was a two-year waiting list, but of course the scarcity value alone adds to the model's total value.

I just hope it stays with the family when my time on earth is done.

Snake?

Snake? Really?

I was merrily playing the xbox when my GF said "Hey baby, is that a snake?"

I glanced over and a few feet away there it was. Quick little thing it was too. About 40cm long, which doesn't sound like much, but still big enough to deserve respect.

My first thought was to give it a wack, but since I have a touch of the Buddhist in me, I felt it wasn't right just to kill it just for being a snake. Besides I had no idea if was harmless or dangerous.

My snake handling skills are non-existent and my identification about the same, so instead of smacking it, we rang a snake catcher up. I wasn't going to take a 50-50 chance of playing with a potentially deadly snake for my first time.

The catcher turned up, mentioned it was an adult Golden Crowned snake - mildly venomous (not fatal) but painful if bit with a guaranteed hospital trip and managed to eventually snatch him. I'm glad I didn't give him a whack (that's the buddhist in me. Not fair to kill something for simply existing) plus it was in a bad mood and would have bitten given the chance. It was not only quick, but very, very annoyed. He put up quite a fight.

Normally the handler charges about a $100 dollars for removal, but he was a local on his way home and did it for free. The snake got to live, and we didn't have to pay. Win all round. Very nice of the bloke to not charge.

Aside from a few different markings, that type of snake looks very similar to a particular snake that is 100% fatal to humans. I wasn't afraid of it, just not stupid enough to mess with something I wasn't sure about. I kept an eye on it and maintained my distance


(PS - Snakes are extremely uncommon in my area. Especially when found in a living room, slithering around bare feet )

To me the only thing about a snake .. is when it's dead !!!.. every snake to me is a killer snake.

I would really harm anyone who thinks .. it's funny to try and put a snake on me, even in a playful mood. I'm dead serious about being afraid of any snake.

Ha! Its getting warm here again - 39 degrees tommorrow - and the Eastern Brown snakes are back out in force. Snake-catchers charge $155 a call-out,

Yeah, it was nice of the bloke to do it for free.

I'm a selective Buddhist - I couldn't guarantee a clean shot and didn't want to make it angrier than it already was. I didn't really want snake guts on the carpet either

What was good in it. I kindda managed to put myself together in an instant, smiled, even laughed with them. I didn't even take it off though I suspect people on the street might also see it because I was with my motorbike.
