Solved Bios screen freezes on startup

Just a bit of info on a problem I had in the fall.
I took in a PC from a friend at work that I was going to try to get working and salvage it. It would post, but that's it. It sat on the post screen and there was nothing else.
Keyboard showed that it had power, but it wouldn't follow any commands at all. Got a motherboard/cpu/ram combo. Using the original power supply and a new HDD, it worked just fine.
Sidenote: even though the keyboard showed power, I couldn't enter the bios, as if the USB controllers were toast (tried in all 6 usb ports, didn't bother trying to find a ps/2 keyboard.) Power Supply was fine also.

so what your saying is i need a new mobo?

Well, going by what you say, i'm not so positive, but in my opinion, it's leaning that way.
Does your POST screen show that it is detecting the ram/ hard drives?
Mine seemed to take about 2-3 minutes before it detected anything at all, which is wayyy too long and a sign that something was shot.

I just wanted to share the problem I had, which turned out being the motherboard. I'm guessing since it wouldn't go past the POST screen on mine, and the USB wouldn't actually work, that the MB was shot since it wouldn't do anything even when hooked up the new HDD to it( did that before buying the combo, just in case). Also, nothing happened when I had a disc in the dvd drive.It was as if the whole MB was toast and wouldn't see anything that was connected to it.


I would still go through every possibility of combinations to see if anything changes before assuming it's the MB. Mine was just obvious once I had the new HDD.

Okay, well, for some reason I find this problem fascinating, but like I said "too many cooks...", and this seems beyond me so if anyone needs anything I'll be the gopher....

well the funny thing is my ps/2 keyboard powers up but my usb keyboard doesn't. The thing is my mouse does power up no matter what usb slot i enter it into it will power up just not any of my usb keyboards. Tried two usb keyboards and one ps/2 keyboard. None of them power on expect for the ps/2 keyboard but the usb mice i try in them all power on in all the usb slots. My sata seems to receive power but it doesn't read it and all the sata plugs give power to both my hdd and dvd drive. My IDE powers on also. But the problem persist i'm thinking I need a new mobo but want to eliminate all possibility's before doing this just to make sure. Thinking about trying a different psu on the mobo to see if this would fix it.

I'm gonna reiterate something. The issue started after you removed, then replaced the PSU, so I suspect it is something you did that caused it. Of course you may have somehow ruined the board in doing this too. check the PCIe power to your GPU if it has them.

Just a though. Is their a 120v/240v switch on the back of the power supply. If so make sure it is set correctly with the power supply unplugged.

actually it'sthe same psu all I did was remove it then put it back in. It's the stock psu that came with the computer when i bought it. And i will double check all connections again, I could of possibly connected something were it doesn't go go and it could be causing the problem. Will check again, Also forgot to mention i also when removing the psu accidentally removed these little tabs that say powersw,resetsw and h.d.d lite. Um kind of embarrassed to say this but i sort of forgot what pins they were exactly but knew which pins in the area just not the order and sort of did the guessing game with them till i got power Um if you can help me out so I can check if i put them in the right order which i think i did since everything powers on lol i sort of lost track which pin each was on due to unplugging them quickly. Still learning my way inside the tower lol but hopefully i learn from my mistakes to better my future and next time il'l know exactly what to do. Again sorry i didn't mention this earlier totally blew away from my mind till right now when you mentioned it. But ye if with the new psu i have coming in the mail doesn't fix it then il'l probably take it to a shop since i'm a bit inexperienced when it comes to the mobo. Barely started getting into learning about the hardware last year since i been taking a computer repair tech class in my highschool. I'm learning alot though from the class and from what i see here in sevenforums though. I see it as a learning experience from my mistakes, still upset i messed it up like that though :/ But ye i was planing to upgrade my psu this month so that's why i took this one out to see if i could get the old pc to turn on with the psu but then i saw it needed a microatx plug which is what i should of checked in the first place before removing it. Anyways new corsair psu coming will try to see if it works with that one and if not possibly take it to a shop and see what they can do for me like to make it work or suggest me a mobo and have them put it for me since i'm kind of scared i might mess up it up again.

Expose the mobo as best you can but don't mess with it much more until you take enough well-lighted camera shots that our mobo experts can help you plug PSU back correctly.

I know it was the same PSU, what I alluded to is what you said, you may have mis-connected something(s). Post the exact model number of your computer or see if you can find a name and model number on the motherboard.
As Greg said, don't try anything else until we can get a view of what you have.

Got the new corsair psu today and will check for the model number when i get home. Can't right now not at home so just for references my mobo is a ASUS M4N68T-M V2

i installed the psu with the correct connectors this time and it powers on fine but same issue. Going to take it to the shop so they can find out what's wrong with my mobo because it's not a power problem that's for sure,had a friend of mine help me out. I'm hoping they can figure out the problem and if I have to replace the mobo then I'll have them install it because I don't trust myself messing with it anymore hate that this happened to me, why couldn't have it gone smoothly. Connected two psu in the past before with no problem with slight help from a friend but messing with my own made this outcome for some unknown reason. Anyways will proably take to shop on monday to have it inspected for me to know what is wrong with the mobo. Thnx for all help really appreciate it but fate has brought me to this unwanted conclusion.

this is how i connected my power cords i belive i did it correct but one of the fans on cases door lights up the lights but doesnt spin idk what wrong with that and want to ask what power cords would i put into the the new video card i bought atm i have the 5450 which doesn't require power cords connected because i want to get the computer to work first before adding the new 6870

for the GPU you should have two 6-pin connectors, they won't go anywhere else. Your fans look connected right, try another fan to see if it spins up.

From what I can make out it all looks connected OK except for a 4 or 2x4-pin connector near the CPU.

As far as I could tell, the fans are connected properly. Even if they weren't they shouldn't cause you to hang in the BIOS. You got the CPU fan connected, too, right? (Or is that where the non-spinning fans are supposed to end up? I don't see anything on the Heat Sink at all.)

Molex connectors (the four-pin jobs with all the connectors in a row, not the square ones) can sometimes not make good contact because a wire has been pushed back when you plugged it in. Check that.

Don't forget what Britton30 said about the GPU power connectors!
