Can i use 9ah Batteries instead of 7ah Batteries in the UPS?

Hi.. some months ago my UPS batteries died on me after a little more than 1 and half years and then i replaced the batteries from the same store few months ago. The batteries that came in the UPS were 12V 7.5ah (each) and those guys convinced me that 12V 7ah (each) batteries will work fine too.. now a couple of days ago i had a power-failure and the UPS kept the PC hardly 8mins and suddenly started beeping fast and shut off everything even the LCD was running on lowest contrast and brightness and only windows was running so there was no peak load as well on PSU and the last batteries used to give around 15 to 20 mins easily.

So now i know those liars sold me out the low-quality chinese made batteries which cannot even give much backup time and who knows if they're refurbished? they did'nt came with any warranties. Now my real question is im looking to buy some better qualities Lead Acid Batteries for the UPS and i was think if i might be able to use 12V 9ah batteries instead of 7ah or 7.5ah.. i heard that the 9ah will hold more charge and can give some more time for backup (just in case) will they work?

Hi boogie , You will be fine using the 9ah batteries as long as the charger inside the UPS can sustain the charge rate on its float cycle (it should be able to ) , When you bought the 7ah batteries were they fully charged ?

Yes pebbly i charged them alone for about more than 15 hours and they are always fully charged but they are not good quality

Aside from paying a high price for a battery from the UPS maker, buy one with the same specs in a brand you know to be reputable for your area.

My old APCs use the same 12v batteries as many of the corn feeders down here. I get mine at Tractor Supply. They last a good five years. And being in a rural area where power drops at just the hint of a rain, that's a long time.

Amp Hours basically gives a reference on how long a battery will run on a certain load, example, a 1amp load will run 9 hours on a 9ah battery and 7 hours on a 7ah battery. a 9 amp load will run 1 hour on the 9ah and 45 minutes or so on the 7ah.

And the capacity of the battery won't boost up the VA rating of a UPS, that is determined by the DC to AC circuits in the UPS. All you will get is extended run time.

The goal of a UPS is to keep your system running long enough after a power failure to be able to save your work and do an orderly shutdown. Seems like 8 minutes is plenty of time to do that. If you really want to be able to run for the duration of the power failure without interuption, you should look into a backup generator.

I stand corrected. I was going from my experience (In auto part) with automotive batteries. Seaeld Led-acid batts may work differently.

hahaha i wont be dropping anything on foot Ivan.. the problem is i wont find these batts anywhere in Pakistan i guess and oh yeah 850 USD is'nt it cheap?

Yes i heard same just like Zepher mentioning above! and if it does really extend the time so i would be more than happy...

strollin i really agree with you and your right about 8 mins that it's enough time to shutdown the PC properly but in my country the power-failure does'nt happen once in a while coz it's going on daily-basis and on scheduled time and this becomes a real big problem when im gaming coz as soon as there's power out while gaming (where the whole pc is running on peak mostly) it sucks the life of the backup time within seconds.

Golf cart batteries would do a better job, they're heavier duty.

I'd consider a couple of 6V golf cart batteries in parallel, along with an appropriately sized inverter and a smart, 3-stage charger to maintain the batteries.

I can get them but my UPS does not support External Batteries and it is mentioned in the booklet that do not attach external batteries and you may damage the ups or something like that...

i also wanna know that my UPS running 2 12v batteries @ 24v probably so can i use 6v batteries lets say 4x 6v batteries with some good ah's?

If the power goes out on a schedule, wouldn't it make sense to shutdown the PC when it gets close to that time instead of waiting for the PC/UPS to die?
You can schedule a message to remind you and/or shutdown the PC with a scheduled task.

That would kinda fall under the external battery clause....but that might be what you end up doing anyway.....

I would go with the battery type that it is supposed to be. If you could attach an external It would likely pull to much amperage from the UPS's charging system since it would be a bigger and more powerful battery.
You could get a new UPS too.

That's why I suggested golf cart batts, inverter and charger previously. Those three items together would replace his existing UPS with a much heavier duty, homemade UPS. I have a similar setup for my RV, coupled with a Honda 2000W generator I can power all my electronic goodies in the RV as long as I have gas to run the genny to recharge the batts when they get low.
