My Windows 7 HP laptop has a bad virus.

  1. If I choose the "restore to default" option within Windows 7 will that get rid of the virus? I never made a restore disk.
  2. Can I get someone elses's restore disk to do the job?
  3. How do I restore the files I backed up in an external HD?
Thanks for your help.

Depends on the virus and the way the restore is set up. We need the name of the virus and you system specs.

Please download the free version of Malwarebytes.
Update it immediately.
Do a full system scan
Let us know the results at the end.

After running Malwarebytles this is what showed up

rogue.FakeHDD (5 of them)
Pum.Hijack.StartMenu (2 of them)

Also, there seems to be some sort of "system checking" virus running.

Thanks for your help.

You got FakeHDD? just wondering but have you noticed any files gone missing? This one has the tendancy to hide stuff. I got that and it hid half my computer.

In fact it might be the exact one i had.

Malwarebytes should get rid of most of it and get rid of most of the problems.

Unhide.exe - A introduction as to what this program does

Unhide.exe is a program that will revert many of the changes on your computer caused by the FakeHDD family of rogue anti-spyware programs. This family of rogues pretends to be a system optimization program that will solve errors with your computer’s hard disks, memory, and performance. It will also display fake alerts stating that your computer has numerous computer issues and prompt you to purchase the program in order to resolve these issues.

It is very important, though, that if you are infected with this family of infections that you do not delete any of the files in your %Temp% folder and that you do not run any temp file cleaners as they will delete this backup folder. With this folder removed, we will not be able to restore the shortcuts back to their proper location.

I ran Malwarebytes and "cleaned" out the FakeHDD virus. Now I can't connect to the internet.
It would be so much easier if I could just somehow get a Windows 7 restore CD. I am so sorry I didn't make one.

Im sorry you cant connect to the internet. This doesn't usually happen.

I read up on the internet and i found this from this website.

Can't Connect To Internet After Virus

The important stuff i want you to try:
Can’t Connect To Internet – Check Your Web Browser Settings

One of the ways a virus is able to re-direct your browser is to set up a Proxy Server connection. You need to make sure your web browser is configured properly. Otherwise, you’ll receive the familiar “Internet Explorer Cannot Display The Webpage” error. Do the following to look for a proxy server connection:

  • Open IE
  • Click Tools, Internet Options and then the Connections Tab
  • LAN Settings
  • Uncheck Proxy Server box if checked
See if that helps your cant connect to internet problem.

If proxy server box is not checked than cancel the operation.

If that dosent work than i would download the unhide program onto a flash drive from another computer run it than start backing up your important files for a possible reformat and reinstall of the operating system.

Hopefully it wont come to that. Ill see what i can do.

About your W7 restore cd.

Sadly I couldn't find the post on the forum but this might help with your restore cd.

Where to get Windows 7 restore disk for preinstalled HP laptop? - Microsoft Answers

HP laptops come preloaded recovery partition will allow you to create a set of Hp restore disks that can be used to recover all of the original software in the event of a major problem by tapping the F10 key continuously when the PC is first boots up. However, there may be times when recovery discs are needed to restore the PC. By using the Recovery CD-DVD Creator program, you can create a set of recovery discs to restore your PC back to its original condition.
Creating A Restore CD

The recovery CD set contains a complete set of the original operating system, drivers, and application software that shipped with the PC. The Recovery CD Creator software can be used to creat a set of recovery CDs for your computer. Because this software actually contains the Operating System, the Creator program allows only one complete set of CDs to be created. This data that will be put onto the CD is the same as the recovery CDs that you’d receive if you’d actually ordered them from HP.

You’ll need a blank CD-R or blank DVD-R.

To begin, click Start, then All Programs. If you have an HP Pavilion click Hewlett-Packard and then HP PC Recovery CD Creator. If not, try clicking PC Help & Tools, then HP CD Recovery CD-DVD Creator to start the program.

You will see a welcome screen. Click the Continue button on each screen to start the disc creator. You will see how many disks are necessary to create the HP recovery disks. Label them, so you do not get confused after each burn.

The disk will burn, verify data, then eject each CD when complete. When the process is complete, you should have a working set of HP restore disks.

You will not be able to create another set, so if you lose or damage these disks, you’ll need to contact HP for a replacement.
HP recovery disk:
Order Recovery Discs for Windows 7, Vista, or XP - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

If you do this you will probably lose your data so i would still back up all the programs that are important to you.
