American ISPs to launch massive copyright spying scheme on July 12

This viewpoint that all bittorrenting is bad is way off. Blizzard uses bittorrent p2p technology for faster downloading of their massive client. Linux distro's major way of being downloaded is, by torrents.
Massive amounts of other free to play mmorpg games out there (perfect world....) i noticed used bittorrent technology for downloading their games.
So with that being said, if this is an attack to throttle filesharing again... its getting ridiculous. I had my ISP throttle my bandwit before... and i really don't want to be affected by this again just because the industries are so paranoid.

Yeah. Watch me download Mists of Pandaria for WoW and some other MMORPGS. big woop. Stop spying.

like I said - if they indiscriminately do this and affect customers who aren't doing anything wrong (unknowning wifi owners/legal data dl'ers) they will lose trust and business

if they inadvertently prove they are tapping into your data as to legitimize their intervention they could get in trouble for warrant-less wiretapping

do they want to lose customers?

because it looks like either way they will lose.

You have to remember that most people aren't even aware of this. We know because I posted the article here. Unless it becomes a "cause celebre" it won't get a reaction. Only when SOPA became well known did it get a strong reaction.

Also, the idea that people will leave their ISP's in protest reminds me of the "boycot the gas stations so they will lose business and lower their prices" emails that circulate every so often. I won't be leaving my fast ISP, and most will not either. Especially when all the major players seem to be on the list.

This issue will have to become well known for their to be an uproar. A Guy

yeah i got throttled before from my 5.5mb download to 2.3 for like 3 weeks for downloading a couple of steam games like tf2 and other ones that i had bought like me2,dragon age and nfs hot pursuit when i got them on the steam sale back in November. at&t hates it when i download anything apparently, have to do it in like small amounts every day so they dont throttle me. So if i need a big file like say the bfbc2 update which is around 2gbs i can do that but wait like a day or so before getting another file bigger or around the same size. hate it

Im confused. Few weeks ago Obama passed that bill for Internet Privacy.

So ...
We can keep things private on our end and from other sites, but now the ISP will be spying on us anyway?

So we are protected from sites but not our ISP....

You have to remember that most people aren't even aware of this. We know because I posted the article here. Unless it becomes a "cause celebre" it won't get a reaction. Only when SOPA became well known did it get a strong reaction.
I'm a bit confused. Why does the fact that you posted the article indicate the amount of reaction that others may have? Someone had to post it, but whether it was you or someone else, it would be the same. I would imagine that it has also been posted in forums, blogs, etc. elsewhere also, but all that we can focus on is here (unless someone want to take the baton elsewhere).
Also, the idea that people will leave their ISP's in protest reminds me of the "boycot the gas stations so they will lose business and lower their prices" emails that circulate every so often. Whether you stay or go with your ISP is strictly your choice, but I would not remain simply for a little more bandwidth, which usually doesn't come free anyway.
I'm not suggesting that you go back to a dialup connection (although I would consider it). but don't you have any options otherwise?

I can't help you with your confusion. It has nothing to do with the fact that A Guy posted it. It had to do with the fact that someone posted it. If you are making the assumption that if I hadn't, someone else would have, that is your assumption. You sure like to add your own spin to others postings.

You might not remain with your ISP, but I wasn't thinking of you as representative. I was expressing my opinion that the average user will not leave their chosen ISP in protest. Hell, the majority will likely be clueless to the whole issue, as I stated. Most people will not have access to multiple broadband carriers, much less one not implementing this program. So they will remain, even if they know about the issue, and are not happy about it.

I have to aggree with the "it needsto be spread more" part. When SOPA came out, it was practically evrerywhere in the internet: blogs, Youtube... even 4chan, 9gag, reddit, etc.

Thing is, people NEED to be made aware of the facts, and only then can we see a possibility of an uproar.

As far as I know, this is just an American problem...at the moment, but once it's in place here, they will probably push for it elsewhere also.

This is terrible and just wrong on so many levels! I feel sorry for you guys in the USA... no doubt we will eventually get it over here in UK.
Why don't they just get on with it and microchip us all and put CCTV cameras in out homes...just to make sure we are not doing anything we are not supposed to! Here in the UK we apparently have the highest number o f CCTV cameras than anywhere in the world and each person gets an average of over 300 CCTV appearances per day... so our government will no doubt love this.

I have had my rights infringed. I only found out by sheer chance. It has happened to me more than once.

Ask around others in the business - and you can get similar stories.

If you are lucky enough to find out - and if you have the proof, and you approach the company concerned - they simply pay up what they should have paid in the first place.

Often it involves using your work in a foreign country. It is extremely unlikely you would find out - only if you happened to have a friend who was in that country at the time - that friend just happened to see your work - then reported back to you. Preferably your friend should get some kind of proof as well - but they would only do that if they understood the business - otherwise it would not cross their minds to do so.

If you don't find out - you never get paid.

These are not tiny sums - typically £1000-£5000.

I am convinced I have been ripped off tens of thousands this way.

Companies have nothing to lose by doing it - in the unlikely event you find out - they pay up. Otherwise they don't. It is that simple.

I am not talking about spotty teenagers in their bedroooms downloading a few songs.

These are companies ( corporations in American).

I have never heard of this guy - but his podcast is interesting - about 4m10s in :

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if Harper tried this. But the media is by law supposed to be truthful, so I anticipate that the cause and affect will be swift and Harper would fail.

The UK is extreme, it wouldn't be because they are a predominantly right wing nation ? In Canada we are more Left wing, although most people got hood winked by the Right in the past election, now we have a Right Wing government.

Left wing...right wing, they both are attached to the same bird. They may not flap in sync, but ultimately they will arrive at the same destination. If anyone complains about the route, they simply point a feather at the other wing. They stay aloft by plucking the feathers of others. Make no mistake, I do have my own bias, which may not always be in sync with the with the true rhythm being flapped out, but then I doubt that most people's are. We are all on a strange migration, that has taken many years just to approach our destinations, but we shall land soon.

That is why it was said. "Narrow is the path". Too far left or right...your toast.

I think that we are both on the same roadmap.
