American ISPs to launch massive copyright spying scheme on July 12

I guess "The Cloud" won't be a fun place after all?

How is this going to affect cloud computing? Like I said there needs to be a comprehensive, legit, and transparent approach to this. Just because people are using bandwidth does not mean they are doing anything illegal.

So how do the ISPs differentiate the two if bandwidth usage is a factor in their suspicions? People are paying for it right?

or what if you're a fan of legitimate free content sites (freeware, music) and dl massive amounts of it? Ya know the whole "apps" craze, cnet, bandcamp type of sites...

How can the ISPs prove they are vetting the data without putting themselves in a position of illegal wiretapping?

And once they prove they can very well know what kind of data is being shared - won't they put themselves into a legal corner by allowing other types of illegal activity to go unanswered?

This is one of the main reasons why pirating happens. Availability is just non-existant in some places.
In some cases, I am sure this is a problem. I'm in the US, and I don't think the overwhelming reason for piracy here is a lack of simply unavailability.

Having no income is why some people pirate as well, but not as high as the reason above.
I think this depends upon your location. The overwhelming majority of piracy that I know of is for software, music and movies which are readily available, however people don't want to pay for them when they can get them for free.

I'm in Austalia and availability is a problem accross all categories except for maybe applications. Several times games have not been released in Australia because of censorship. The same goes for occasional movies. Some just aren't released maybe because the sales wont justify the costs.

Its extremely frustrating and I come accross it several times a year.

I'm also on a disability pension and extremely poor, so for me just about everything except costs directly associated with my boys is a luxury. I have plenty of incentive to pirate, and I'm not alone. Most of my friends are in the same situation.
Many elderly people are also in the same situation.

For me, I dont have access to the stuff. I don't have money to buy the stuff, and I sit at home most of the time, so I get bored. If it weren't for the fact that most pirated stuff is terrible quality and full of viruses I could imagine being tempted.

I hear you. As another example, games (specifically, the PSN). We live in the same region so you're probably aware we miss out on a huge ton of content on stuff that only gets released in NA/Europe. It's not like Sony has licensing issues with foreign distributors either; they own the entire damn network. So yeah, it's discrimination for no reason (that we as end users can see). We can buy the same base games but pretty much none of the extras or DLCs.

Agreed with the DLCs. Before, DLCs were games that enhance the current game just as how expansions would. Now, most of it feel like parts of the whole game delibirately cut off just to be sold and make more money.

i have searched for a entire list and none popped up but there is a small list
Each ISP has to develop their infrastructure for automating the system,” said Sherman, at a CNet
Of course the usual suspects are behind this plan including the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of American (MPAA). The plan is backed by all major ISPs (Comcast, Verizon, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, AT&T) and has the support of the Obama administration.
if i come across a entire list i will post it here for you

I'm beginning to feel that the real culprit behind all of this is Sony. Googling, I've found returns regarding deals between Sony and each of those ISPs which seem to have to do with TV codes for those companies being built into Sony TVs. Sony owns Columbia TriStar, thus definitely has a vested interest in these actions. Though RIAA and MPAA appear to be spearheading all of this, I don't think that they are at the root of it all. It appears that Japan may be getting revenge for the bombings of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and WWII in general. This is not the first time that Sony has attempted to stick their thumb into the pie.

That wouldn't surprise me, Sony has a less then stellar past (Hidden rootkits on DVD's, etc).

One question is, how many people are going to get falsely accused of downloading illegal stuff when they have no knowledge of it or even get accused when they watch something legal? Mistakes do happen.

I guess some people will be headed for the local coffee shop or supermarket to do their d/l ing. How are these places going to react when they get an E Mail accusing them of illegal activities?

Hmm, for that matter, what about the public library?

EDIT: This entire scenario reminds me of the plot of a movie (Minority Report)

In the year 2054 A.D. crime is virtually eliminated from Washington D.C. thanks to an elite law enforcing squad "Precrime". They use three gifted humans (called "Pre-Cogs") with special powers to see into the future and predict crimes beforehand. John Anderton heads Precrime and believes the system's flawlessness steadfastly. However one day the Pre-Cogs predict that Anderton will commit a murder himself in the next 36 hours. Worse, Anderton doesn't even know the victim. He decides to get to the mystery's core by finding out the 'minority report' which means the prediction of the female Pre-Cog Agatha that "might" tell a different story and prove Anderton innocent.

EDIT 2: Which bring to mind the adage that "In the land of the blind, the one-eye man is king".

Mistakes do happen.
that they do like homeland taking sites down that wasn't meant to be taking down & there was tons
& a movie company had a tool that went into hotfile and was able to remove any copyrighted content but what happened they removed 100s of content if not 1000s that they had no right to so hotfile put a stop to that
in the long run it is going to hurt the isps pockets

The only sure way to hurt the ISPs pockets is if people abandon the ISPs on the spy list now...in groves. That will make the message loud and clear, so as to fend off this entire mess as quickly as possible.

Why do you feel that it would just be a handful...because this thread isn't being flooded with responses? A lot of people simply lurk without putting in their two cents, but that doesn't mean that they won't spend them otherwise. In any case, each person must do what they believe is right, regardless of what anyone else may do.

The solution is simple, stop pirating stuff, or potentially pay a crazy fine if caught.

A simplistic answer that does not address the real problem.......failure to respond to this type of situation will lead the music/movie industry to believe that they have won this round of the battle and embolden them to go this direction again at will. The only real answer is for people to refuse to accept this and download all they can find. Which I admit is not a good answer.....this current situation leads to more contempt for the consumer which is anything but acceptable.

No different for the idea that eBooks should need to be repurchased by libraries every 25 loans..... I KNOW that real physical books last a lot longer than 25 loans...nothing but greed. I personally would love to see authors and musicians bypass the publishers and music labels. The only thing they will understand is a direct hit in their bank accounts.

I sincerely hope that people see through the new offer's by the labels in cooperation with Walmart to copy your owned movies to cloud storage for $2 or $5 per movie.......once you only have your media stored in the cloud, it is only a short step to limited usage of purchased media.....mark my words.....this is what the music/movie labels are really after. Repurchase after x number of views. Again, nothing but greed as the writers of Books and Movies are not being paid a reasonable amount for their works. Lets look at new releases of eBooks for example.....Hardback book $20 - $25, paperback $8 - $15, eBook about $1 less than the printed book....there is no excuse for this practice considering the cost savings for not printing it or shipping it, but it is getting worse all the time.....just check on books that you would like to read and you will see this trend accelerating.
