Hi everyone, just need some help please

Old laptop - hidden file of photos

Cut and pasted folder to external HDD without changing back to not hidden

Cut and pasted to new laptop, said "do not have permission to access this file.

I have already tried going through the steps to take ownership. Should I start over again or anything else I can try?

If I click on the files themselves it says :windows photo viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location;

Appreciate any help!

Have you tried an elevated command prompt and used attrib -h on the folder?

Click the Start Orb, then All programs, then Accessories. You'll see Command Prompt near the top of that menu. Right-click on Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator" in the dropdown menu. You'll either have to enter the password, or just click OK if you are logged on as a member of the Administrators Group.

When the command window opens, type the drive letter of the location of the folder in question, and hit enter.

Next type "attrib -h <folder name>" (without the quotes) and hit the enter key.

If it works, you'll just see a blinking cursor. If not, you'll see an error message. If you get an error message, post that back here. If no error message, type "exit" (without the quotes) and hit enter.

Now try to take ownership again.

Ok it's on the external drive still so it is F drive

changed to F (do I need to take ownership of the whole F drive or just the file (and all subfolders I bought over from the old laptop) or just the folder that I'm having trouble with?

folder is called Private and it is green sub folder name colour whereas the one above it is black. if that matters.

typed attrib -h <Private> and message comes up as

The syntax of the command is incorrect

Advanced security settings also says I am the current owner so I don't know what the problem is, unless it's to do with a conflict with permission entries (inherited from), I have no clue

File - properties - attributes also say it is read only and I cannot change this

It's just for the folder you're having trouble with, and the syntax error was the "<Private>". It doesn't need the < > around it; I just used the brackets to indicate that you should use the actual folder name.

To remove the read only attribute, use attrib -r

I appreciate that you are trying to help, but the attribute change you suggest will only make the folder visible. It will not change the permissions on the folder or the ownership. We need to see what the permissions status is with icacls and then set it up appropriately for the directory, subdirectories, and files.

I don't see a rush here. ICACLS is a bit more complex than ATTRIB. I think we can take it a step at a time.

bbearren: Understand where you are coming from. Just wasn't sure you were heading in that direction...

GarnettFan4Life: Are you sure Private exists on that drive? Even if it is hidden, icacls should run on it. I just ran it on a hidden folder in my drive... Run the following commands and post back the results of the second command:
F:
dir /a

Ah, ok, the command then should be
icacls F:\BackupMar12\Private
Also, see what the result of
icacls F:\BackupMar12
is

Alright, let's just do this:
Code:
icacls /t /c F: /grant "Authenticated Users":(M)
icacls /t /c F: /grant Users:(RX)
icacls /t /c F: /grant Administrators:(F)
icacls /t /c F: /grant SYSTEM:(F)
