How to get data out of a defective HDD ?

Hi.
My grandchild has an eMachines Notebook, that is defective.

It's the HDD, that has issues.

The HDD is a Thoshiba MK6465GSX.

The Notebook has difficulties when booting, and cannot get out of post.

I have the HDD connected to another computer now, and can see it in Computer Manage window.

What to do, to save data ?.

The atatchment shows the HDD in Manager

Thanks for your reply.

I installed the recovery application.

I couldn't boot the CD in the Notebook.
Then I did in another computer, where I can see the HDD in focus via an USB interface.

What does the dump here show?.
I real defective HDD ?

Can you download the iso of the bootable cd, burn it in a blank disk , and boot from the disk ? In that situation it works better.

If it is allowed to check it, then it may search for any data that can be recovered . Just for another try.

This is what I did at first. But the Notebook will not boot from the bootable CD

I got the info:

This CD does not support windows server".

As it's not a server, how to do ?

Does it have a DVD drive there? If so, most probably ( dont have pretty much experience with Asrock ) F11 should be the boot menu key there. Check for it, during startup, in the motherboard splash screen, the boot menu key and bios setup key is mentioned there.

If the conditions hold, Place the disk in the dvd drive, restart the netbook. When starting, tap and hold F11 during startup, it will enter you in the boot menu page, where all the possible boot devises are listed. Select the dvd drive using the scroll arrows, and hit enter ... the disk will start booting.

As I couldn't get up the wizard for recovery, I put a W7 install dvd in the dvd drive.
I could get it up, and tried a recovery, but had not luck.

After I started as I would do a new install. As the setup came to where the
partitions should be set, there was no harddisk to be found.

Probably the HDD has got blown!

I have studied the HD Diagnostic, thank you.
But as it's a Toshiba drive, I seem not able to get diagnostic tool. Toshiba cannot identify the drive from it's S/N.
I have attached a dump to this reply, that shows info for the drive.
Can you help me further on ?

It's for a windows 7 64bit. Which one to choose, and how to make a bootable CD ?

I ran Gparted, that includes Testdisk.

The HDD seems to be dead.

Hi,

Since you could see the disk when plugged into the other computer (as per your 1st post), please attach it again, and then run TestDisk from the other (good PC) and see if it can see the drive.

If you click the link for Toshiba it gives you a DOS CD scan ISO file to download, burn to CD using an image burner like Windows Image Burner or ImgBurn, then boot to run the full scan.

I've run across this problem in Crashes and Debugging. The problem with Toshiba drives is they are not Fujitsu Brand:

It is only designed for use with Fujitsu Branded Toshiba ATA/IDE hard drives

I usually recommend that people just run the short and long tests with SeaTools, but in cases like this where the drive is dying, it is better to try to get all the data off before doing any intensive testing that might render the drive in worse shape. At some point, SeaTools may still be recommended to determine how bad the damage is; first priority should be obtaining the important data off the drive, though.

Try copying out the data to external or USB first using Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk by this method: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Or use free Paragon rescue disk ; recover data

I`m sorry , I couldn`t resist.

What other machine do you have it hooked up to ? A desktop I presume. You should be able to hold the drive in your hand and rotate your wrist and feel if it`s working.
