My acer aspire 7720g used to work fine, logging in in 30 seconds maybe, but suddenly it takes 20 minutes. The hard drive light stops being lit after 20 seconds or so and it only says welcome despite have verbose messages enabled. Starting windows takes normal time, it's windows 7 ultimate, regularly defragged, ccleaner every month and the install isn't older than 6 months. It is however, pretty full, about 1GB free on a 220GB drive. Whe it logs in, it's full speed and absolutely fine. I'm pretty good with computers and I've got no idea. No recently installed software, changed hardware or new services, windows updates or anything.

hmm, strange windows 7 takes normal 2 GIB RAM uncompressed.
  • I would try to make's some memory free on the HDD.
  • Also check msconfig (run command) for unwanted applications in boot.
  • And a complete virus scan.

Have you been using ccleaner's registry cleaner. You always need to read over what ccleaner is going to fix before you run the registry cleaner. Honestly, I don't think you should use registry cleaners at all. They almost always end up messing up someone's computer. Try to system restore to when your computer was working and don't use registry cleaners.

I'll check for those but also, when it was on a minute ago, it the graphics started messing up, it wouldn't show aero and I couldn't access the nVidia control panel's settings, they all came up blanks. I'm gonna uninstall the driver then see if it works.

No, I don't use the registry cleaner, I don't' trust them after an incident on an old laptop.

Ok. Good. Try freeing up some space with disk cleanup, and uninstall old programs that you don't use to free up some space on your hard drive.

I've got it free to 3.25GB, and it still hangs, but when it loaded up last time, it came up in aero, even though the control panel was still broken.

It sounds like it could be hard drive related, aside from the amount of free space, have you checked the hard drive for errors (chkdsk) or run any manufacturer tools on it? If the drive light goes off during the login process, that can often result from network issues. Try disabling any network connections and rebooting.

As for registry cleaners, let's do some house-cleaning. Some are bad and should be avoided. CCleaner is not one of them, and is very safe...and highly recommended. It's default registry cleaner doesn't dig deep enough to mess up the system. That doesn't mean you should use it blindly...but there is very little to worry about, in terms of using it.

Try removing either the program by Bethesda Softwork, or try removing the program by Bioware. You could remove both is you want.

You only have 3.25 gb free. Windows needs to have atleast 10gb free to run smoothly. If you delete just one of those 2 games that I listed, it will free up space on your hard drive. Also, try what Deacon Frost mentioned about turning off your network card to see if that affects your boot time.

I'm going to guess that this is a laptop, so adding a second hard drive isn't an option. If so, than no, there's no better idea for the time being. The rule of thumb used to be 30%....meaning to keep a drive running efficiently, you needed at least 30% free. Take that as you wish, but if this is a laptop, then it wasn't designed to be a gaming system, and you should probably look into removing some games.

That being said, is this an SSD? If not, check to see if you have other partitions on the drive through Disk Management. There may be a large restore partition that can be reclaimed (assuming you can make restore discs).

If the network test doesn't yield any results, you'll pretty much be left to get a bigger drive or remove some games.
