Nice times!

I'm still getting killed by my bios time. I've updated the BIOS to the most current on ASUS's site. Still sitting at 86 seconds. I'd say at least 40 seconds of this time is waiting for the MOBO to do it's thing.

Try disabling uneeded bios features and hardware. Also see if you have hard drives that the bios is waiting on to spin up.

The more components the BIOS has to check, the longer it takes. Especially disks that have to spin up.

I've only got 2 drives. A 120GB SSD that has the OS and a 2GB Caviar black datadrive.

Everything else is housed externally on ext. HDD. Would an external hdd via USB be something that is holding it back?

Yes. An external hard drive can hold the bios post time up. Try unplugging the external drive and post another reboot time.

Nice! Now, disable uneeded hardware in your bios and tell your bios not to look for any boot drives except your ssd. Don't disable the drives, just select a no boot option.

Absolutely - unless the external drives are switched off. Unplug them for a test and see what happens.

My external drives have switches and I only turn them on when needed. Is better for the HDDs also.

Wow. Very quick! SSD's make all the difference. Wish I could get an SSD in my system as easy as you can with a desktop!

This restart time is a little slower than usual but OK for a normal HDD.


Look how annoying it is to get an SSD into my laptop. Not a case of undo 2 screws and slide it out like my old one.

Wow! I can't believe that Dell doesn't tell you about those two cables that are connected to the touchpad. Laptops are kind of complicated to service.

You were lucky - your BIOS cooperated. On my HP desktop the BIOS needed more than 25ms. The best I could ever get was in the 40's.

Did you look for a BIOS update from HP? I updated my BIOS just fine. It takes about 5 minutes and then you reboot your pc.

No I did not. But in the meantime I gave this HP to a friend. Got a Dell (which I don't like).

It is just not well organized inside. I had a hard time to fumble the SSD into it. It is their top of the line (XPS 8300), but it has only 4 Sata ports on the mobo. And except for video editing (with the i7) it is not really any faster than my old HP.

Unfortunately I could not upgrade the HP CPU - the AMD 5600+ was the maximum. Else I would have kept it. But I do a lot of video encoding and editing. So I wanted more CPU power.

My HP only has 4 sata ports, also, but that's all I need. I have 1 dvd-rw drive, 2 1tb hard drives, and 1 Crucial M4 ssd. My HP will do all I need it to do for probably the next 5 to 6 years. My HP isn't top of the line. It was a budget pc when I bought it. Then, I upgraded from the integrated graphics to the Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 512mb. I also upgraded the psu, added a second 1tb hard drive, and added this ssd.

LOL, I did exactly the same upgrades in my HP. Antec PSU, 9500GT and OCZ Vertex2. Too bad I got stuck with the CPU. Would have loved to put one of those AM3 CPUs in, but I did not have an AM3 socket.
