just installed norton. any good?

i used to use the 2010 norton which was a hog but after seeing whs's screenie it doesn't look as bad as it was. its using less than nod32 uses on my pc. i dont think id change from nod for anythin. i got a full license for kesperky with my board but stayin with nod

I used to worry about things like amount of memory used by applications back in the day when I had 128-256MB of RAM. Ever since I got above 1GB of RAM or so, I don't think I have ever concerned myself with how much RAM an application takes. With 2GB or 4GB of 8GB of RAM, does it really matter if your AV runs in 18MB, or 24MB or even 48MB?

Exactly my opinion. But there are still people that talk about 'resource hogs' when a program like Norton uses very little RAM and quasi no CPU time. Some others worry about a few MBs in the program files when they have TB size disks. I guess some people do not advance.

Are you sure that it's free, or is it just a free trial for a certain period? The reason I ask is because every computer I have ever bought has Norton on it free for 90 days. That doesn't mean that what you have is the same, but you might want to make sure.

Frank, If you keep reading the ads in the Sunday paper, there are sometimes free Nortons. The way it works is that you pay the $69.95 (or whatever) but you get a mail in rebate of $70. So at the end you only pay the sales tax. I got my Nortons like that several times.

I'm not a Norton fan from issues dating back to before time but I have two Norton fanboyz in the house I help with their systems. Norton has come a good ways and though it's still not my cup o tea it works for them and the support is exemplary in many respects. The one I'm curious to know about from everyone is another I used even further in the dinosaur days and that's McAfee. I had heard rumors of Intel buying this stink pot of AV software and giving it a good going through? Does anyone have any good McAfee stories or an update on them?

I can't recall a single good word, but I may have missed something.

The complaints seem to concern how to get rid of it as much as how well it works. And their customer support is supposed to be mediocre.

Norton was highly regarded in the early 90's when Peter Norton still owned it. Started going downhill once it was sold to Symantec. I think Symantec finally realized they had to do something about it as the bloat/problem reputation it had had become so prominent and widespread.

McAfee was also one that used to be highly regarded (early 2000's) but had also gone downhill.

AVG was great until they bloated around 2007/8. They've since slimmed back down.

At least, that's how I recall it all happening. They all go through their ups and downs over the years, I guess. That also pertains to their detection capabilities.

As to the cost of NIS 2012. It can be had free, I have caught it twice. Last time at New Egg for 39.95 with a mail in rebate of 39.95. You have to watch for the deals while your subscription is still valid. Then when it is time to renew you just enter your key.

Comcast does offer a free version to it's customers. It's called Norton 360 or something. My dad has Comcast and he gets this free of charge for being a Comcast customer.

i dont know how good mcAffee is now but sky give it away with their broadband. i used to use avast 6 free and was really happy with that. i liked the auto sandbox it has but i eventually switched to nod32 which i think i will end up sticking with. ive been using it about a year n never had a problem. i recieved a full liscence of kespersky with my new board but am sticking with nod

IMHO (and for what it costs)


STRICTLY from a stability (BSOD) perspective, Norton (even the current versions) is in the top 3 offenders.

I was a long time Norton fan until it started becoming bloated and started causing BSOD's.

Any malware app can cause BSOD's but Norton does so more frequently than most.

For a lightweight (and free) malware application the current wisdom is Microsoft Security essentials.

Ken, you must have some other problem in your system. I run NIS on 3 systems since years and I never had a BSOD ever. And I really don't know where the bloated part comes from. It uses hardly any RAM or CPU, does all the scans at idle time. What else can you expect.

With MSE on one of my systems I caught 2 viruses within 1 week.

I've never had any problems with Norton either. No BSOD ever.
I'm using Norton AntiVirus only.

My subscription runs out in 17 days, but I've got a plan.

I dont BSOD. Had one on vista years ago but none since. I did say this was another mac vs pc, Amd vs nvidia, best malware, holy wars.

I base my opinion and it is only my opinion (as yours is yours) from having done thousands of freezing, Bsod'ing analysis.

We will have to be content with dis-agreeing here for I have seen far too many Norton related to do anything other than not recommend it.

As I said I dont use MSE specifically for the same reason you dont, but Norton in my view is fairly open and shut.

I dont often voice my opinion in public because it is mine.

Just trying to call them as I see them here.

Does that mean the honeymoon is over?

Norton and Symantec

I was an avid fan of Peter Norton prior to Win 3.1 and then Symantec bought him out and it went to garbage. About a year ago I decided to give NIS 2011 a try. It worked great. Now on 2012 and still truckin'. I feel guilty. I have had zero trouble from it. Just today it shut a site off that was trying to redirect or something.

Fair enough Ken. If you found Norton at fault for a lot of BSODs, I take that as input. I can only talk from my own experience.

I don't touch those BSOD threads. I am too old to wade thru the dumps. Have done that long enough in the past - and all that in hexadecimal. One needs a lot of patience for that. I admire you for taking the time.
