Not a techie so I will explain as simply as I can, last nite got a email in my spam opened it and deleted it. Next all hell broke loose one of these spyware viruses poped up, you know it just keeps on running no matter what you do. I tried to stop it using the task manager but no luck. Final soultion was jut to turn off the pc and plug in my exernal HD and restored my operting system in my C: drive using Acronis.

Well that went just fine and I'm back up and running. But I also have 2 slave drives D: and K: K is where I have all my photos, files and music stored and I use Acronis to back them up into my D: drive.

So I go to open my D: drive and it says folder is empty yet if I look at it in MY Computer it says that there are a lot of files in there. So I popped in my Acronis Disk and booted from that thinking that I could at least find the back up in there but nothing. It did show another backup still in there from my camera that the Acronis file was corrupted.

Next was to check my K: drive that had the actuall Folders of Music, Files, Photos etc. The folders are still there and they show somthing is in there but when I open them up there are empty. There are also still a few folders in there with the files still in them.

Would there be any way to see what is in either D: or K:? Somting is in there but I really suspect that its just junk from what ever hit my PC. Should I just erase both of these drives and start fresh?

From now on I think I will never leave my back up slave drive in my PC I will put it in my external doc when I want to back up somthing. Just like I did with my C: master back up which is in a external HD.

MY OS:
Ie8
Win7 64 bit
Alienware Aurora
C: Master
D: Slave
K: Slave
Acronis Home 2011
Zone Alarm Security Suite (latest)
Yahoo Mail
Gmail

Hope I explained this well enough, sorry I do not have any info on the virus as I had to restore my operating system.

Welcome to Seven Forums. You may not be a techie but you are a very savvy amateur like many of us.

After you were up and running did you run a thorough virus check with your ZASS and what were the results? Could you also kindly upload a screenshot of your Hard Disk?

I just right clicked on my D: and am runing Zone alarm scan it looks to be files in there and also it looks like there is also a recycle bin in my D:?? This is very weird. I did a deep scan of the whoe system w/ Zone Alarm and it shwoed nothing.

Also as mentioned I had to do a complete OS restore using my externa, HD so what ever hit me was gone. When this virius hit I could not even get to my ZA. I wish that I coyld remember the name and what it said it was doing, but all I can say it was one of these bogus vuris scanners saying everything was wrong and do you want a tril version or to buy. It just kepy on running no materrer what I tried to do to stop it.

Many thanks , sorry for got to say HELLO! Still a little wound up from this nonsence ;-)

UPDATE:
Went to D: Organize> Folder and Search Options> View Tab> Clicked on the radio button to view hidden folders > Apply and Ok and they all re-appeared on my D: and K: Drives. Everything is now back.

I do notice somthing else now though! The file folders and nice and bright normal color but when I open them to the subfolders they are a little lighter color? I never noticed this before.

Would there perhaps be a setting to darken them??

What ever hit my was very strange.

Click the Organize button > Layout > Click Menu Bar.

Go to Tools ( present in the menu bar) > Folder options > View tab > "Show hidden files and folders" > Apply > OK.

Its because the hidden attribute has been added to the files/folders.

Open command prompt, type cmd in start orb search field and press enter to open a command prompt.
Type or copy-paste the command one by one and press enter.

What is the orb search field???????????????? and where is it. If I just go to search programs and files and type cmd it opens up the dos window for C: which is not what I want correct
TIA,
John

At least I always keep "Show hidden files" enabled but always keep the System Files hidden except when in rare cases I have to access them.

If you think that everything is back to normal then please show the thread as solved.

The only issue at this time is that some of my folders are lighter than others, is there a fix if so please pass it on. The same goes for my photos thumbnails they are very light compared to before. Once I open the thumbnail the photos are fine.

At least I always keep "Show hidden files" enabled but always keep the System Files hidden except when in rare cases I have to access them.

Stat orb search field refers to the search field at bottom when you click the 'start' button or hit the windows key on your keyboard.
But as long as your able to open a command window, nevermind.
Now what i want you to do is to enter the 4 lines of codes in the code box in my previous post one by one and press enter after each command i.e. enter the first command (D:), press enter and so on.
