Solved Outlook 2010 can't view any attachments

Windows 7 Ultimate 32; Office 2010.

Starting a couple of days ago, I haven't been able to preview any attachments to email--none at all. The message is: "This file cannot be previewed. Try opening the file in which is was created."

If I start in safe mode, it is able to view all attachments without any problem, but I can't find a way to resolve it other than working in safe mode.

I haven't installed any software recently that might account for this.

I have tried many things:

Scanpst.exe repeatedly until no errors
SFC
CHKDSK
Office repair
Created new profile
Checked Trust Center settings
Checked file associations
Changed Norton Internet Security settings so it does not "protect email"

I'm at a loss.

Any advice please??

have you tried the repair feature? or tried uninstalling and re-installing outlook. what are the files that you are trying to preview? PDF? JPEG?

It was all file types, but happily I fixed it. I can tell you exactly what I did, but I have absolutely no idea why it worked: very simply (and just on a whim) I reset the Internet Explorer security options. IE is not my default browser, and it's completely beyond me why this worked--but who am I to complain?

I recognise this exact fault and have sorted it this way.
(all useful replies should start like this, 'helpful' techies please take note)
In Internet Explorer browser toolbar, click Tools, Internet options, Advanced. Cursor well down to the security section and uncheck the box at 'Do not save encrypted files to disk'.

In my particular instance, I had to take the .pdf; out of Outlook 2010's attachment security listing in the registry because it was blocking me from opening up the attachment from within Outlook 2010 and made me save it to the hard drive before I could open the file in Adobe Reader... This was on a Windows 7 Machine with Outlook 2010 installed.

This may work with other file extensions you are having trouble with...Good luck.

Go to:

1. Exit Outlook if it is running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
3. regedit
4. Verify the following registry key for your version of Outlook exists.
   Microsoft Office Outlook 2010 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
   
   Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security
   
   Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security
   
   Microsoft Outlook 2002 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security
   
   Microsoft Outlook 2000 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security
   

Check for the string value:



Level1Remove


If it is there,


Right-click the Level1Remove name, and then click Modify.


check to see if the file extension you are having trouble with is listed in the list of file extensions under Level1Remove, if it is, delete the extension from the list (including the (.) and the ( .... ( .pdf; )

Example of how it may look:

.exe;.com;.pdf;.dat;.mie

this fixed our issue below:

This file cannot be previewed. Try opening the file in the program in which it was created.

Hey Guys, Thanks for the fix, I used majmorris's fix about modifying the registry and removing the .pdf to enable opening the PDF attachments to my MS Outlook 2007 mail. I just deleted the .pdf from the list in the registry and everything is back and working just like it supposed to.

Thanks again, I was searching for the cure, ran onto this fourm and information, cured the problem and then joined the forum.
