Solved Homegroup

All 3 computers on my LAN were set as members of a WORKGROUP, my OS being Win 7 Pro 64 bit, whereas the other 2 used XP Home.One of the other 2, my friend's desktop, has changed to Win 7 32 bit.Neither my friend nor I need to access the other (laptop) computer so I joined a homegroup on the Win 7 machines.

When I open Services on the Win 7 machines I can start the HomeGroup Provider service, and have done so. However, I cannot start the HomeGroup Listener service on either machine. I get "Server-Service Specific error code 2147023143." How do I resolve this?

Apart from that, should I change the WORKGROUP designation of the Win 7 machines, and if so how and what to?

FWIW, irrespective of the above, each Win 7 machine can access the shared folders on the other.

Advice would be appreciated.

In general it's better to use a workgroup type network in a mixed Op system but you may be able to get the Homegroup to work in your situation.

You should be able to fix the Homegroup listener by deleting a specific file.

Open Windows explorer and navigate to the following file.

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking and delete all of the files in this folder. Now restart the computer.

You should check to make sure the following services are set to automatic.
The services that need to be turned on are listed below:

DNS Client
Function Discovery Provider Host
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Peer Networking Grouping
HomeGroup Provider
HomeGroup Listener
SSDP Discovery
UPnP Device Host

It's probably best to leave the Homegroup on all Homegroup machines at that point and create a new one.

I believe that is a system file, in order to access protected system files you need to go into the control panel then to folder options, click on the view tab then go to,
"show hidden files and folders" enable that then hit the apply button. At that point you should be able to access the idstore set, or which ever files are in there to delete them.

Simple change in settings pumps up Win7 networks

The Windows 7 machines can access each other's shared foldes much faster than before, and the same applies to the XP machine.

Homegroups is made for Windows 7 only networks so going with the workgroup is right for your situation. I just assumed from your statement that you wanted to get Homegroups working anyway. The first thing I said was to use a Workgroup instead. Glad you got it working using the workgroup. The link below explains how to get Homegroups working in a mixed Op system network.

I've done my own tests like the guy in the link which I've seen before. I found zero difference in transfer speeds using Homegroups compared to Workgroups. It depends on the router and probably a few other variables which method works better.

I get 8GB transfer speed per minute using Homegroups so comparing it to dial up is absolute hog wash. There are too many variables involved to make absolute statements about this.

I have tried all the steps in here. I have succeeded in starting all of the following:

DNS Client
Function Discovery Provider Host
Peer Networking Grouping
SSDP Discovery
UPnP Device Host

I have not been able to start the following:

Function Discovery Resource Publication
HomeGroup Provider
HomeGroup Listener

I have deleted all the files under C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking file contents.
When i attempt to start Function Discovery Res Pub. I get the following error:"Windows could not start the Function Discovery Res. Pub. service on Local Computer" - error 0x80070005: access is denied

For Home Group Listener I get the same quoted error msg as above but also "error 1079: the account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process"

For Homegroup Provider I also get an "error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start."

This all worked fine last week. However, two days ago i had a problem with Windows Update and i had to search on here for fixes. it works fine now but this seems to be a side effect.
