Solved My new Bulldozer has shipped.

That's a cool little upgrade, bios update drop FX in and away you go. That's exactly what I did with the quad core last task and my MSI board and the online bios update makes it a breeze. Update remove quad install 8 core re-assemble and away you go !

After doing some reading, I'm somewhat confused. This review:

AMD FX-8150 3.60 GHz with Windows Patches Review | techPowerUp

Says that the Bulldozer is a 942 pin processor, and that the AM3 MBs are only 941. Though it speaks of doing a BIOS flash to convert to AM3+ (if the motherboard was laid out with the extra socket), it still won't be capable of HT 3.1. Yet it also talks about using a 941 socket AM3 also, but how would you fit a 942 pin processor into only 941 sockets?

It's clear to me now that this bulldozer is a monster and clearly more than the initial pundits reported, will be hopeful that the W8 or further hotfixs continue to allow all it's greatness to emerge.

I can understand your impression of the improvement, since you went from a quad core to it, but I'm still trying to evaluate the improvement going from six cores. While the FX8150 is definitely faster clock than what I have, in what I've read so far, it doesn't seem to translate into that much of an improvement in actual tasks.

I think you are right. Most have said if you are running a top quad or a six core the upgrade won't be as dramatic. But for me this was always going to be the move as a second stage when I purchased this mobo. When the 8120 hit 149.00 I then I got (2) 20.00 certificates dropping it's net price to 110.00......how could I not jump all over this?

Understood. When I can find a FX8150 at a price that fits my budget, I'll probably get one, just to see for myself. Unfortunately, I'm still not convinced that my current motherboard could properly handle it, so I would need one with a 9 series chipset, which places that further back on the calendar, because I still have major expenditures looming on my vehicle which takes priority. Maybe by then, there will be something even better...?

Looks like you might hit some higher numbers there 4.6 looks great i actually had my ram running 1800 Oc but didn't make much difference cinabeanch ran but i got a lower score so i took it back to where i have it

i thought bring the ram to a higher clock would improve lol im good where im at

I can always get higher clockable ram i was running 4.7 ghz windows got to the splash screen then BSOD'ed lol

Do you have any real world comparisons? For example, the amount of time to encode a video, or the time required to rip some audio, or the time to compile code? Comparisons from before to after?

video encoding and transfers are pretty fast

So i would say real world performance is there but you know in the shadows someone will beg to differ


Also take into account everything isn't up to speed with this technology

Im sure there will be more patches to fix problematic issue's ,Have to say though makes my quadcore look like a turtle the burst in speed is uncomparable

Not really my idea of fun, doing the before and after thing. You tend to think of these things after you make the change then the whole idea of changing back and forth to run benchmarks and other test kicks in my "what a pain in the ass" mode. So with that said "your mileage may vary". Was my quad fast .....yep real fast....is this system fast, omg yes! But in the end it's what I designed this system for and then recycle and re-use the quad. I just wait till the products have hit and then fall in price. I'm not an early adopter but more of a future planner and patient waiter. lol sometimes I have to admit the wait is a killer !

^ I understand. That was why I was hoping that you would have captured some of this information before you started and keep running the tests in the middle.

I understand the fun and challenge of overclocking. But it's the end result that really matters...in my opinion It's the same way that I feel about racing cars and such. You can pack all of the horsepower in the world into a car, and you can modify tons of performance parts and the like. So, lets say you have a drag racing car that you take the track and race every few weeks. And lets say you bump up the horsepower from 200HP to 400HP and you spend $5k, if your overall quarter mile times go from say 12.5 seconds to 11.9 seconds....it's an improvement....but it's not the 2x improvement that the horsepower might indicate.

I just think it would help to quantify for others whether or not an upgrade would be worth it in terms of real world things. For example, telling me that you went from 3.6Ghz to 4.1Ghz doesn't tell me anything, but saying that it used to take you 240 seconds to encode 1 minute of HD video and now it takes 180 seconds...I can relate to.

Oh well, glad to see this chip is working out good for you and you are getting the performance out of it that you had hoped for.

And using auto analogy this is like adding a free flow exhaust and a low restriction cold air intake along with proper caster, camber, tire pressure and some octane boost to the fuel. It allows the stock components to work better and aids in handling both on and off the track. Do these things double horsepower....no way but a 10-20% gain isn't out of the realm of possibility and that's nothing to sneeze at.

Well I'm not hitting those High numbers like i was with the previous board and what not im trying to play it safe and not get into putting massive v-core like i was before

That has me worried and i am well hitting 61c especially in Bios

im already 54c Cpu temp in Bios so I am like hmmmm:huh:

My idle temps are wierd Im wondering if i did a clean install will it be any different
Seriously put the new board same model and new cpu same series and hooked everything back up like normal

Im some what thiking it would be a good idea

Well a clean re-install won't hurt but it seems odd that this could be an issue but hey one never knows. It may be some as simple as a bit too much TM and its acting as an insulator and not a conductor of heat. This why I don't like super thick compounds as I just don't think they flow as well. I mentioned the single lentil sized dot has now given way to one small dot surrounded by four small dots in a square and I think this will encourage the paste to spread out to all four corners.

Here is some more Temps and Cinabench test this is about 20 pts lower then i would have scored with the other set up But my Gpu's are running faster this is @ 4.4ghz temps are improving

Actually waiting like I did and then as luck had it Tiger had a deal running and I picked up another 38.00 off so damn the chip was twenty five bucks less than I paid for my Phenom 3.4BE. It's a beast of a chip and yes I'm real happy, it took awhile to sort out some issues with my ram and overclock but this too is normal!
