Dllhost.exe uses an enormous quantity of RAM

Hi, each time I open a folder containing videos with big size my dllhost.exe uses an enormus quantity of RAM making my computer freeze. I have a 3gb of Ram and a Quad Core Q6600.

I first thought it was because of my codecs, so I removed them then reinstalled again K-Lite Codec Pack, it didn't work so I removed the K-lite again and just installed FFDshow (like someone said on a forum), it didn't work, so I installed Kasperksy Internet Security 10 (trial version) to check if it's a virus, no virus detected ...

I also stopped the UAC.

What can I do now ?

i think this is due to the video thumbnails being shown.

possible work-arounds:

1 - reorganise your video files into sub-folders, so there aren't too many on the screen at once.

2 - use the 'details' view rather than icons

hope these tips help your ram guzzling problem!

also it's very good practice to install an antivirus program first, before you install anything else - especially if you've disabled uac!

I had already an antivirus of course (Microsoft Security Essentials), but I changed it to Kaspersky to see if there is a virus (because it is more powerfull).

And I don't think it's because of thumbails, I don't think so because it does it even with folders that are showed as "list" without thumbails.
It does it when I make a right click on a video and then click on properties ... but only on folders containing Big Files (or MPEG2 video files). (And even if I do the right click on a little file, if the file is on a folder containing other big files it does the problem)

It doesn't do that on folders containing a lot of little video files (200mb or more) even with Thumbails activated.

Plus, on Vista I think I had the same problem a long time ago, but when I disabled the UAC it worked. The problem is that on Windows 7 we can't really disable the UAC, ok you have the low level, but can we disable it from Services ? I have not found that ...

on my system, i only see dllhost appear in task manager briefly for a second or two when browsing video folders - it seems to do its job displaying thumbnails, and then leaves.

sorry i can't help you any further, maybe it's connected to your codec packs? i don't use codec packs myself, i use kmplayer, which plays everything using its own internal filters.

I've already uninstalled my codec pack. And it never got a problem before, but I'll try to see what programm do that, it can be an old codec or something like that. Thanks.

ive just tested with my videos folder, i have around 50 videos, mostly 720P, 20 of them 720p Films, at most the dllhost.exe used 30mb when creating thumbnails.

But CPU usage was quite high at 25% just on that dllhost.exe, and overall at 50%, didnt catch the other process causing that.

i also have Q6600

Ok, my problem isn't the CPU usage, it's often high by the way, but the RAM which is very high that my computer freeze. But I have some ideas, I'll try them and say if it works. Thank you

Here is the pic (attached on the bottom).

I can explain the problem in details now. When I go to this folder (which is in the pic) or in other folder (containing big video files). I have the problem.
When I open some folders nothing happens first (not dllhost.exe run) but as soon as I click on one of the files (even just with the left click of the mouse) the dllhost.exe appears on the task manager and it grows up very fast ...

But now (I think since I've added the ddlhost.exe in to the DAP exception list)

It stops at 1 562 420 then disappears. But the second I click on another video file, it appears again and do the same thing.

But with the DAP exception it seems to be stoped before freezing.

The only thing I can reccomend is to do a repair install because something has went corrupt with it...it is memory leaking bad!

I have Windows 7 since one week, and it's an upgrade from Windows Vista, and I have another problem by the way (my start menu programms disappeared) so you think it's an install corruption ? Are you sure of that ?

Can I do a repair installation if I mount the DVD of windows seven on a Virtual Drive ?

I have Windows 7 since one week, and it's an upgrade from Windows Vista, and I have another problem by the way (my start menu programms disappeared) so you think it's an install corruption ? Are you sure of that ?

I would believe so...If you can than I would consider first a complete format (if you can back everything up first...). If not than do a repair install; Don't worry as you will lose nothing in the process.

Yes I know I already did some repair in older version of Windows. Never on Windows 7, do you think it can work if I mount the DVD on a virtual drive ? As I have some problem I think it's the better idea. I can't format as I have too many thing to backup. Thanks.

Hm...interesting theory...I actually upgraded from XP to Vista with a mounted ISO on the XP partition. I would imagine that a repair install could be done the same way...but (unless another member could attest to this) you are going into uncharted waters...so backup first!

Does the memory spike when you have the web server shutdown and browse to the said directory? You could also try a sfc /scannow before doing a re-install.

/Scannow: Scans all protected system files immediately and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. This command may require access to the Windows installation source files.

Good suggestion (I actually forgot this...). OP try this first before going the way of format/repair
