What don't you like about Windows 7?

A dislike of mine is not in the OS but the GUI. Show desktop. I use the taskbar left docked (irrelevant, I suppose). Show desktop is simply in the wrong place. Each time I tweak out a shortcut and place it near the Start button, it will eventually "self correct" and disappear.

Since this is the GUI, I will find a replacement or the hack in due course.

Nope. Too lazy, and I can grab the RTM when I get back from Band Camp.

I haven't installed the RTM yet., still running 7100RC x64!

Is there anyway for folders NOT to be sorted in the RTM? e.g. I can drag/position folder icons any which way I like just like in XP?

Thanks.

1. The taskbar could be a tiiiiny bit smaller. Plus, I'd like icons to magnify, like the Mac OS dock.

2. MS left in a lot of GUI elements that (by now) should be changed.

3. Lack of a "Gaming Mode", in which explorer.exe is killed when playing a game.

4. Gadgets are still ugly, and annoying to use. I'd rather it be like Mac OS X, where you push a key, and gadgets come up.

yeah I've edited my registry..etc but some games will reintroduce mouse acceleration which is really annoying. When i was using vista I found a patch that patches win32k.sys in memory to disable mouse acceleration no matter what the setting. I cant get this to work for windows 7 unfortunately. The patch is called wcafix for anyone interested. edit: oh didn't read properly...what your suggesting is to turn ON mouse acceleration, what I want is to turn it OFF completely, forever and ever.

I thought it was large at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

You could always turn up the display size to 125% for a bit then change it back. it will look much smaller then. :p

3. Lack of a "Gaming Mode", in which explorer.exe is killed when playing a game.

Explorer shouldn't take up enough resources to matter. Though if you really want to you can just kill it in task manager before playing a game.

It's a real pain in the ass having to do the Ctrl+Alt+Del thing in the middle of a game, even before it. Also, even on my rig with a Quad Core CPU, 4GB's of RAM, and a GeForce 9500GT, Explorer being gone makes a big difference.

Ctrl+Alt+Del is the hard way of opening the Task Manager. It seems much easier to just right click on the clock and opening it through there.

For restoring explorer afterwards, ctrl+r should still work fine to run...Run. Much easier to use that than opening the TM through ctrl-alt-del then using Run through it.

Since no product is usually ever 100% perfect I'll say that I have 2 problems with Windows 7 - one fairly trivial and one a bit more serious.

1) Networking is still way way behind Linux especially for "Mixed" computer environments -- and remote connection (RDP) is fiddly especially if you want to do it via "Web connection" which requires (when it works) an ACTIVE X application to be started on the client computer -- naughty stuff indeed which in any case forces you to use IE as this type of application won't work with Firefix etc.

2) The serious bit -- The Library concept is a great idea but totally flawed since if you have non W7 computers on a network you can't access the data unless you know its real physical location - which defeats the whole point of libraries in the first place. I've nearly lost valuable data by messing around with these. (Of course always back up stuff before experimenting).

Otherwise I'm quite happy with W7. I have to keep XP for a while as well as I do have some applications and hardware that won't run on W7. The XP system will be a VM as these appsrun on an XP VM but I WON'T be using Virtual PC -- too slow. VMWARE workstation or Virtual Box are streets better>

Cheers
jimbo

Well... I hate the fact that Win7 is not released retail until Oct.22nd, but it is leaked out on the net months before...its like a tease... I want my legit keys damnit @#%#!%!!! (not being ungrateful about the leaks, just want to be able to buy keys so I can install it _and_ be able to activate it...) :(

Also... +1 to the talking Windows... But would you really want to hear it screaming and choking every time you got a BSOD? (I kid...that never happens anymore...right?) :p

networking is clumsy and difficult to access , compared to using a macbook the process in windows just seems so mmm unnecesary

UAC still needs some method where I can specify a program I trust so that it will work on boot forever.

I would feel much more supported and part of a greater family if the feedback option was still there and saw results :geek:

I dislike they took away the columnheaders in list view. Yes i understand that in principe they serve no purpose but it was an easy way to sort the contents and be able to scroll sideways.

Now i have to put Detail view and on folders with many files (my free collection of movies for example ;) ) you have to scroll for ages or rightclick, select sort, click.

I few things I think could be improved, I would not go as far as saying I currently dis like them just think they could be better-

1) The start orb should be movable instead of stuck to the left.

2) The bar icons should not all be packed to the left, you should be able to space them or move the to the other end.

3) Samba NAS, error 1208!!! I have to map individual folders instaed of viewing all that's on the network HDD.

4) The file system should have been started over, eliminate need for anti virus, malware, spyware protection etc.

5) More customisation without the need for 3rd party software.

6) Why did they drop the animated effects? If the computer was capable the option to have them should have been there. (I'm searching for the video will link it soon.)

Yes it looks outdated now cos we are used to seeing it, I took my laptop to work to show some of the die hard XP users what Win7 is about, 6 people or put in pre orders that day!
