Windows 7: The New XP?

I'll have to agree with Hammer Head...My laptop isn't touchscreen, and it'd probably cost alot of money in order to replace my screen to one that is...I'm just going to hope though that Microsoft will release a version of Windows 8 that's for non-touchscreen targets as well...I don't think that I will wait for Windows 9 in order to upgrade, but I'll probably wait until it has been released for a while/the prices go down alot on it before I do.
On what was said earlier, I think Windows 98 was better than XP ^_^ But then again, maybe not...xD
I also don't want 'cloud computing'...I hope microsoft isn't planning anything like this for Windows 8 or 9?

I'm staying with Windows 7, and like marsmimar said, Microsoft are now suggesting that Windows 8 was not intended for a desktop, when even though they produced it for the desktop? Are Microsoft now realising they've made a huge mistake? Perhaps suggesting it was always intended for tablets and mobile phones, less people will laugh at Microsoft was failing to produce a new OS people actually like :L

Never heard of an upgrade to a touchscreen system. Maybe it's just because Touchscreens haven't been popular. But I don't think there will really be an upgrade route on old laptops to include touch screen technology.

I'm just going to hope though that Microsoft will release a version of Windows 8 that's for non-touchscreen targets as well.
Don't get your hopes up. As Maximum PC said, the liklihood of seeing Windows 8 without Metro is akin to Microsoft buying Apple and building the iWindow.

..I don't think that I will wait for Windows 9 in order to upgrade, but I'll probably wait until it has been released for a while/the prices go down alot on it before I do.
I don't think historically that once an OS has been released and around for a while that prices really drop. I think Windows 7 still costs the same as it did at launch. The only discount I know of was the Windows 7 family back, giving you 3 copies of Home Premium for $149.

Tablets are such a limited use device, and I think that is why they call it a toy. I too have a tablet and it's ok for a few things, but it's simply just a phone with a larger screen. It doesn't even remotely come close to replacing my laptop or desktop for daily use.

I once heard Windows versions were like Star Trek Movies...every other one is terrible....:p

But you do have to wonder....what is Windows doing? As I saw in one article, from the earliest versions to 7, people have been acclimated to a start/programs menu and other Windows "standards". What's up with the very radical change?

Win 8 does have some excellent features such as the "Reset & Refresh" feature. But why the new GUI that people are scratching their heads about? Did MS do any consumer research?

Yes, I do believe 7 will be the new XP.

It wouldn't suprise me to see 7 become the new XP. Pparks1, three were some people who modded the early eee pc's and added a touch screen panel. It wasn't anything ASUS offered or authorised though, and not an easy upgrade. It would be interesting to see if type of thing starts happens again though.

They should have called it Windows TS. The "TS" could mean what it means traditionally to most English-speaking people, or it could stand for Touch Screen. Either way then we'd know it wasn't meant for desktops. It would have saved some time. But I guess if you make money with something called '7' the next thing has to be '8' where these decisions are made. :(
Agreed. I used the Windows 8 Developer Preview for a long time with the registry edit (to remove the metro/bring back the start button) and really enjoyed it, if they only made that a standard option on the RTM. Though saying that I'm sure people will find third party methods to get 8 running how they like, I tried classic shell but it still didn't feel right. Seven is definitely the new XP IMO.

In my family of son, daughter and 2 children each, we have:

Wife and self - PC, laptop, both running Win7 64, networked.
Son +2 teens - 2 PC's + PS3. PC's running XP Home. Grandaughter - lappy, running XP Pro, all machines networked. Grandson & G-D wireless in rooms, dad's PC ethernet.
Daughter - Laptop. G-son, PC & server, NAS, laptop, networking & streaming stuff to all machines & 3 TV's. Also running 4x Virtual networks. (He is studying Cisco & MS Networking & Security.) All machines running Win7 64 bit Pro, Server running Windows Server 2008. His 6 - year old sister uses any family mamber's machine and will soon want her own.

Point of all that? - Each of us is going with what we have found to work for our specific computer needs. Some of the family, younger members, will probably move on to other stuff, but that's because they are young and have the age-old human thirst for new knowledge. And the opportunities that technology advances will bring.

For myself, I cannot see me taking up Windows 8, but I have a phone that communicates and I don't need or want a Smartphone or Touchscreen; but I respect the fact that others do.

Computing is a very broad church.

I've been telling this since before Windows 7 came out. Just as XP, it is a rock-solid products that many people grew to like a lot. Even the performance improvements of 8 won't budge a lot of people to upgrade, not when there is such a big hatred towards MetroUI.

How real people will use Windows 8

Yea, I saw that video. That man is more skilled than a lot and he couldn't find his way around. The Release Preview isn't any better than the Consumer Preview was about that. Oh well, I will just stick with Windows 7 and I will be happy. There is no point in complaining about Windows 8 anymore. It is just plain bad and we will just need to downgrade to Windows 7 and be happy.

At this point I have this so called wishful thinking that Microsoft should just take the Apple way and build a completely new OS from scratch that has nothing to do with Windows and make it so easy and cool that it blows the whole IT world in shock...

Well i tryed Win 8 nd actually i really liked it but then got frustated of 3 4 system crashes (no succesful recovery any time). This happend on CP and RP, so i got back. As for the perfomance itself, it s much faster in my opinion, uses less resources nd doesn t ave conflicts but it s def not stable.

If you re looking for an encrypted system then just stick with 7.

Two caveats on all of these musings; first, Windows 8 is designed primarily with touch screens in mind. The necessary compromises to accommodate both touch screen devices and basic PC's make it by definition, a kludgy system.

Second, the vast majority of those buying computer devices are not like us, they never worry about what's under the hood, or how they can make it go faster, or all of the other things we hackers do as we play with and modify our computers. The vast majority of the market like EASY. Metro appears to be that more than anything else.

They definitely need to go with two different, but easily transitional OSes.
