Windows 7: The New XP?

Two caveats on all of these musings; first, Windows 8 is designed primarily with touch screens in mind. The necessary compromises to accommodate both touch screen devices and basic PC's make it by definition, a kludgy system.

Second, the vast majority of those buying computer devices are not like us, they never worry about what's under the hood, or how they can make it go faster, or all of the other things we hackers do as we play with and modify our computers. The vast majority of the market like EASY. Metro appears to be that more than anything else.

They definitely need to go with two different, but easily transitional OSes.

I totally agree with all your points here, catswold.

I would like all forumites to imagine, for a moment, that you are someone who has only perhaps used a computer briefly in school. Or you are a Senior who has never used one, but would like to shop on the Internet.

You want a PC or a laptop, you have a certain amount of money and you enter a computer store. (Please, if you are in the UK, NOT Pc World!) They show you laptops and full systems, with Windows 7 and 8. Possibly with a touch screen. Are you hooked? What do you think? You are dazzled, impressed and gobsmacked by all this, are you not?

I had XP for 10 years, I avoided Vista because seemed to be slow, "closed" and not much compatible.
But now im using Windows 7 x64 and it's very very fast, much more fast than xp, and all seems to work, also old software. However we can use Xp mode, so i see no reason to stay with xp, because it has a worthy successor, seven.

With all this rhetoric over windows 8 which by the way I shall not be using, I think by that time Linux will be quite interesting to work with so probably I will skip the next few variations of windows and saving myself a bundle in the motions....

I dont like the whole touch screen thing. its nice for phones, but not for laptop when you use the laptop to watch movies or play games or what ever. last thing you want to see is finger prints, oil streaks on your monitor...........

I picky about my monitors, I keep them clean and streak free...

about windows 8...

it has some things I like, the new task manager. the speed.

what I dont like is the metro menu. I love my desktop with it icons,folders,background...

Could well be. I don't know a lot of people that are sticking with Windows 8, most tried it then went back to using 7.

Computing is a very broad church.

Completely true!

Hi threre

Even "A Church" can't alter the Basic Laws of physics although it could arguably do something about Human Biology.. !!

Touch Screen on a huge Monitor -- what sort of Arms do you have --or are your eyes not good that you will have to view the screen at "Nose" distance away.

Until Humans are totally Re - Bio Engineered with extensible arms Touch screens on typical desktop type systems won't happen any time soon -- not unless the Insurance comapnies start having to pay out mega large claims for whatever the new "Stretched out Arms" will be to replace "Keyboard Syndrome".

Even with a smallish screen I like to have the monitor further away than I could possibly touch it with -- on a LARGE one --forget the whole touch nonsense.

Cheers
jimbo

Windows 8 is another Windows Vista. Another MS cycle, come out with a pos OS then release one that fixes "most" of the annoyances of the previous one.

How real people will use Windows 8

First time I have seen this video.....great, this gentleman is far more astute that your average user and still didn't figure it out. so much for intuitive interfaces. His final comment is telling, everyone has heard of MAC as the alternative and it didn't phase him to put it out there. Go man......you rock.
