Whats the best Windows 7 Service Package?

Heeey,

I just wanted to have a lil debate question (xD) for fun, but what do you think is the best Windows 7 Package? Home Premium? Starter? Professional? Ultimate? Or some other one maybe?

For me I think Home Premium. Because with professional its harder to upgrade to ultimate, and then with ultimate it costs more. Then with starter all the real options on your PC are locked, such as the aero theme or performance or security options and such. I currently have starter and I'm working on getting home premium. The reason why I like Home Premium is because of the aero theme, and all the more options I have. I don't think my Inspiron 1012 mini should have professional or ultimate because since its only built for lightweight uses, unlike gaming and such, there wouldn't be much purpose for that.

But that's me. What about you guys?

Buy only what you need. To spend more money on features you may not need is just not fiscally responsible.

I use Ultimate for 2 main reasons: Remote Desktop and Windows Backup to a network share. If those features were available in Home Premium, I would use that instead.

Just like to add the difference between versions is just features. No performance differences at all, concerning gaming or hardware. Starter will run just as good at Ultimate, may not take advantage of the all the hardware resources but that is a discussion for so other time. Each version run on the same core, light and fast.

Well that's kind of both right and wrong. Software wise everything functions basically the same but not all versions support the same hardware. Obviously there are differences in capability between x86 and x64 but I'm assuming you're not referring to that.

For example, only Ultimate, Enterprise, and Professional support more than 1 physical processor.

Also, among 64 bit versions only Ultimate, Enterprise, and Professional support a maximum of 192 GB of RAM. Home Premium only supports 16 GB and Home basic only 8 GB (there is no 64 bit starter version). 32 bit versions are incapable of more than 4 GB and Starter only supports 2 GB.

So while they may all appear to be the same, it could be argued that due to these restrictions 1 version performs better than another. It all depends on the user and his/her hardware. For example, installing Starter on a high end gaming PC would render it significantly slower than an identical machine running even Home Basic, much less Ultimate.

Both of those features are available in Windows 7 Professional.

I'm aware, my point was Home Premium is sufficient for most people and that I would use it as well if it had those features. Most of the other extras I could do without

I'm confused. You say if those 2 features were in Home Premium, you would have used home premium. But those features "are" in professional...so why would you not use that and save yourself money? You spent extra money on Ultimate....that gives you BitLocker and Language Packs.

I didn't think my choice of OS was cause for a debate. Why does anyone choose one OS over another? Preference. That's not something I need to justify.

However, if you must know, I use other features such as native VHD boot occasionally, although I could live without them. Just because I mentioned two features not in home premium that I often utilize doesn't mean that there aren't other things, note that I said "main features."

Sorry for the scrutiny, I was just trying to clear up any confusion. Based upon your original post above, it read to me like you thought you had to be on Ultimate to get those features...I was just commenting to make it clear for others that Professional included those features as well.
