Hi
I was wondering if anyone knew how to do some stuff on Word which is similar to Scrivener.
What I would like is to be able to divide a document into subjects or chapters and name them.
By this I mean, for ex. when you open some pdf files you have different chapters and sub chapters on a column to the left. One can easily skip forward to any of these just by clicking on them.
I would like to do the same thing but with Word.

Yes, you can create a table of contents, then enter your text paragraphs etc, marking them for the table of contents as you go (Or add the TOC to an existing document you may already have) Then you can view the table of contents on the side by checking the "Document Map" box on the view menu and it will behave exactly as you describe.

You can also alternatively mark up the document up with "bookmarks" and create you own TOC or jump pages using URLs from the top to various points in the document if you want.

There are other ways too and subtle things about using the TOC and document map you can read about in the help.

Hi thanks a mil
Now that I know you can, and now that I have a vocabulary for what I should look for then I will definitely look at the help file.
Thanks again

BTW are you familiar with 'Scrivener'? If not, and you have time and are in the mood, can you look it up and see its intro video to see what that software is all about? Why? basically it is a writing software for writers--those of us who have very long documents to write such as script writers and book writers (of which I am aspiring to be) and if u knew it perhaps you could guide me to either how to do similar things with Writer or if you knew of a similar open source, preferable portable, software (If I could avoid installing something then I will.)

Michael

Heh I'll try looking into it.

I wrote a 220 page novella in word and it was really a PITA. I just wanted to do a simple book formatting with a few illos and I was always fighting the formatting. Would love to have something simpler that was JUST for book writing with simple payouts.

However... these days books are rapidly all becoming much more free format e-publications so it may be already a bit too late for the traditional novel format any more.

Ha naw... it was a NaNoWriMo project. Afterwards I worked on it a little and formatted it and made a couple hand bound book copies for fun but it's not for any one to read for the most part :D
