HDD nearly full after system restore.

I have done a fresh system restore recently and have had to re-install my software and download all my windows updates. For some reason though my hard drive has now got 80 GB more space used than before I performed the restore, and I haven't even got any HD movies on my laptop.

Is there anyway I can see what programs are using disk space and then I can decide whether to keep or delete them.

There are two programs that will do it for you:-

Windirstat

WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics

TreeSizeFree

TreeSize Free - Quickly Scan Directory Sizes and Find Space Hogs

What is more then likely using the extra disk space it your original install. What you did was restore and never got ride of the original install. Look for a folder called Windows Old or something similar.

That will probably be it, it will be the back-up that was created. Where will that folder be located?

I have found the folder on my C drive, but it has a padlock on it, and I am unable to delete the file, even after I have taken ownership of the folder.

How do I go about deleting the folder?

It isn't a windows file, and I tried that and it doesn't appear when I use disk clean up. I need a to actually go into the C: drive and delete it manually, but it wont allow me.

You might want to start over to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Always boot an OS installer, delete all partitions and repartition as you like, format before install.

BomberAF, I use a program called CCleaner. It is freeware from Piriform . Not sure if it can delete read-only files however.

Just realised that the folder that I was looking at was the System restore folder, so I have altered the size of the system restore and that has saved some space.

What I have found out though is when I performed the original restore a partition was created that is eating up my disk space, is there anyway I can get that space back?

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Management drive map and listings:

1. Type Disk Management in Start Search box.
2. Open Disk Mgmt. window and maximize it.
3. Type Snipping Tool in Start Search box.
4. Open Snipping Tool, choose Rectangular Snip, draw a box around full map and all listings.
5, Save Snip, attach using paper clip in Reply Box.

Tell us what is on each partition.
