How to install new Win 7 on Laptop

I have a ASUS laptop that had been running Windows 7 Home Edition (64 bit) version. The laptop will no longer boot up for Win 7, but I was able to load a live version of Linux. I've been told that the OS system has been removed along with the MBR, accidently. I don't need the information that had been on the system and would just like to install a completely new Win 7 Professional (32bit) version. What is the procedure for getting a proper installation at this point. I've set the BIOS to load from the CDROM drive. What is the correct procedure to follow?

Unless your gonna buy 7 Pro you need to install the version that the laptop came with. It will be on your COA on the bottom of the laptop. More then likely Home Premium 64 Bit.

I would stick with Home Premium if its' the licensed OS which came with the Asus, since otherwise you're wasting the $100+ value which is good for the life of the computer.

If you have retail Professional you can of course install it but may later want to migrate it to another PC to get the value of your Home Premium on the Asus.

To decide whether you want Professional on a machine determine if you need the few extra expensive features because the vast majority of users don't: Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Forums

Win 7 on Laptop

I guess I didn't make my question clear enough? The laptop came with Win 7 Home Edition, but that program is missing! There is no way to boot it up. I have tried Linux through a purchased disk from Knoppix and then was told via the Knoppix Forum that the Knoppix Live DVD disk wouldn't work for restoring the Win 7 Home Edition. That leaves me with a large "paper weight" . I think there are a couple of suggestions as to how I can use my Win 7 Professional disk that would have no other use. My two home computers (wife has one) run Windows XP my choice for an OS. The repair shop included the Win 7 Professional in case I wanted to change my OS at some future date. I like Win XP and won't be changing at this point. Seniors hate change!
I just need the best install for Win 7 Professional for this laptop. I have a wireless modem, so I may be able to move around the house with the laptop. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

I guess I didn't make myself clear: You can reinstall the licensed version of the OS which came with that laptop whenever and as often as you want. Everything you need is in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

But since you seem to have already made the decision to use the provided Pro disk, boot it and choose Custom install, then Drive Options to delete all partitions, create new as you wish or just click Next to let installer create one large OS partition and begin install.

There is information about how to back up your data, best handle drivers and maintain your install in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which will help to get a perfect reinstall.

You say the laptop came with Win 7 Home.

Even if it is now "missing", you can download a copy from mydigitallife.info and burn it to a disk. Then install from that disk and activate with the Product Key that came with the laptop.

I'm not sure why you want to get involved with Windows 7 Professional, unless you know for a fact that you need its extra features.

The installation procedure is the same for Home and Pro:

Backup any personal data you may have.

Boot from the installation disk.

Go forward in the installation process until you see the "drive options, advanced" choice. Take that choice.

Delete all partitions at the next screen and continue with the installation, following the prompts.

New Life for the Old Laptop

ignatzatsonic...that's sounds promising! Wonder why no one else mentioned this option? I don't care about any data on the hard drive at this point. I would just like to have a laptop that functions and if I don't have to use my unopened Win 7 Professional, maybe I can get a buck or two for it? I've had it for about 8 months and I don't think I would ever use it in place of my Win XP???
Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes. Getting a disk to boot up at all may be a problem, although the Knoppix Live DVD worked.

do not include the product key. Just need to know if you have the Product Key for Win 7 Pro.

Sorry, I guess being a senior doesn't cut me any slack. OK , I went to the mydigitallife website and downloaded the Win 7 Home Premium link. It was an iso image file which almost took two hours to open (WinZip) and download. It now resides somewhere on my computer in a temporary folder, all 3.0 Gb. I'm suppose to burn a CD? At 700 MB per disk that's 4+ disks. Am I correct or have I messed up again. Seems like using my Win 7 Professional disk would have been a lot easier, but maybe I'm missing something again?
I'm a slow learner at 77. Just pretend you're helping your grandfather.

Don't worry about it, unfortunately you have messed up, nothing we can't deal with though.

The ISO you downloaded should have stayed an ISO, not been opened with WinZip.

It needs to be burnt (copied) on to a DVD not a CD.

I'll agree it might have been easier to use the Pro disc, since there are fewer steps involved, we can walk you through the other steps if you want to try again.

Do you have a blank DVD disc?

There is zero sense of trying to install anything without a valid key for the product.

For the Home Premium.

The one for your Pro version is inside the unopened package you mentioned earlier.
