My battery life on my iPod Touch 4g hasn't been very good lately and the battery indicator will say it's at 20% and if I put it in sleep mode for a few minutes, it will jump up to around 50%. So, I need a new battery for this device. I read from a report from IFixit that the iPod Touch 4g's battery was soldered onto the board. Can anybody confirm this?

Lol, he was voiding his warranty ;) As someone who used to solder a lot, your iron does magnify any tremble, but he did have some movement :D

My warranty ended last year, anyway. It looks like I could mess up my iPod if I do anything wrong. Does anybody know how much Apple charges for this?

I attempted to replace the battery in my iphone 3gs a few weeks ago, it's still sat in pieces on by desk as the screws were tiny and I just couldn't see where they went to put it back together :(

Hmmm. Try taking it to an Apple Store. Maybe they can get you another iPhone 3gs for cheap if you give them that one. I hate how Apple products are basically disposable. I wish the iPod Touches were a little bit thicker with user replacable batteries.

Now, what about this wacky battery indicator? I have pictures of it below. The first one is the battery indicator before I played a game for a couple of minutes. The next photo is the iPod right after I exited the game. The last photo is after putting it to sleep for about a minute and powering it back on.

You're not the only one. I've had my iPod Touch 4G since last August and have always had slight issues with the battery. It was the same with my previous touch 4G which I got replaced due to a faulty home button.

I think the issue is software based rather thank hardware. I found the same thing on a long coach journey yesterday. If you can still get about 6/7hrs of video watching from a full charge, the battery is fine. My reasoning this this. You play a game, probably the most battery intensive thing to do. When you play, the iPod knows it is doing something battery intensive and drops the meter. However, as soon as you stop and put it to sleep with the screen off, the device is in a very low power state. There is a big jump and the meter goes back up again. However, it doesn't stay up for as long as it normally does, it drops quickly.

I did a test. My battery dropped to 22% according to Battery Pro and the low battery alert appeared. I locked the device for two minutes. When I unlocked it and opened Battery Pro, it said 42%, the same as the built in meter. But, within about 20 seconds, the meter had dropped to 27%. I consider this to be the actual amount at the time.

Hope this helps
Stephen

How long should I be able to play a 2d HD game like Amazing Breaker? I can only play that game for about 1 hour until the device shuts off.

Amazing breaker is a basic 2D game so should last a least 5hrs. The battery needs replacing. Apple will charge $79 for a battery replacement in the US - Apple - Support - Service Answer Center. It's under repair pricing. If you have an Apple store near by, try that first. Sometimes the Genius' there are really nice and will do a free of charge replacement although if it's out of warranty that's less likely. Remeber, if it's jailbroken, restore to stock iOS before taking it in. They are more likely to not help you or not give you an offer/deal is it's jailbroken.

Ok. Thanks for the information. I don't know if I should spend that much money on a new battery if there is a possibility that a new iPod Touch could be released later this year.

If Apple's release schedule is anything to go by, a new one will be out in late Aug, early Sep.
