The script includes, shut down time and post , and selection of o/s - as well as what I would call the startup time.

It was written by a member at Vista Forums. It was intended to compare reboot time on the same o/s - to see if any changes made to startup and/or shutdown time were improvements.

I do not think it is appropriate to measure between different o/s using that method.

I prefer to measure from the beep at the end of post to the usable working desktop - (after the circle stops spinning, and in the case of 7 , after the icons go white and reappear properly).

Just measured 7 now at 46 seconds, Vista 38 seconds.

It has always been that way . With every build of 7 and even when I had Vista SP1 (now using SP2).

On my machine, 7 always starts slower than Vista.

On my machine, 7 always starts slower than Vista.

Its different on my case, oddly enough vista really loads THAT slow on my hardware. i had to wait for 1:15 seconds to get a fully usable desktop with Win7 i estimate its under 40seconds, its dramatically faster!

So, is this the actual-system time, or the best you can do?

I have loads of hardware, mapped drives, USB-attached drives that need to spin up, etc. I assume it's the latter, since minus the BIOS POST (from the OS load menu to desktop) I get 12 seconds if I dismount attached and network drives (almost clean OS). As-is, I load in about 30 seconds and shut down in about 5 or so. (SSDs in RAID0)

However, I lose some 30 seconds in BIOS POST since I have two RAIDs. Also, due to memory overclock, sometimes the machine needs to power cycle to get the DIMMS to actually work.
