Canon Rebel XT not recognized by Win7 x64

2006 Canon Rebel XT. Tried many things, to no avail.

Here's the pressing issue: I'm leaving for Hawaii on Wednesday the 1st of August, and though I can offload my pictures to an old WinXP computer, it isn't possible to lug that with us on vacation. I'm bringing my laptop.

What can I do to get pictures on to my computer? The camera has only a 1GB CF Card, and I don't want to blow $30 on another card, or a card reader if it can be avoided.

You probably aren't going to like my suggestion, but card readers should be a must-have. They are also pretty cheap, but that's if you buy online. Newegg always has a few for under $20. I always use one so I don't have to drag the camera around, and I don't have to use the camera's battery power to offload the photos.

In the meantime, does your camera have a disk mode setting? Do you know someone with a card reader that can let you borrow it?

Have you downloaded the codecs from this link? :

The codecs include your Canon Rebel XT.

Also, I assume that you have installed the software available either on the disc that came with the camera - OR, preferrably - from the Canon Support Website. This is a must.

Edit - I just remembered that you probably can't install the upgrades of the Canon software you download from their site until you have the original software from the disc - that came with the camera - installed in the laptop. I had that experience.
If you don't have that disc, like Deacon Frost suggested, get a card reader.

The codecs include your Canon Rebel XT.

The codecs allow thumbnails to be displayed for camera raw images. They work fine for that, but (AFAIK) it has nothing to do with connecting the camera to the PC for file transfer.

If you go into the menu and set the communications to Print/PTP, the camera will attach to a Windows 7 PC as an external hard drive. I believe that you won't get the control features, but transferring files will work.

I'd prefer the card reader, personally.

Canon EOS Rebel xT communication with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit SOLVED.
After 4 hours of my life and a lot of reading online, I finally got my camera to talk to my computer.
This was also written online too but, It wasn't clearly explained.
So, On the camera, press MENU.
Navigate to to the last Tab to the Right.
It's Orange. (The first choice to change is Language)
The 3rd coice down is Communication.
Press SET and choose Print/PTP.
That's it. Exit and you're done.
My camera WAS set to PC Connection. And, that's how it worked when I was using Windows XP Pro.
Note: I installed & uninstalled ALL the software that came with it and the current versions on the Canon website. Nothing mattered. I also, installed the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack. Nothing happened.
After I reinstalled EOS Utility, latest Zoom Browser, MS Camera Codec Pack still nothing happened. But, ALL these things were installed before I changes the setting on the Rebel xT. So, I don't know if not having all this other stuff and the most up to date versions, would've mattered. I think Not.

Hi I found your reply very instructive but I ran into a problem. On the menu of my Canon Rebel XTi I went to the fifth column with the first choice as "English". However the third choice is "Customs Functions" and not what you listed.

Can you advise?
