Solved power outage = not genuine

This has been going of for a while. Apart from being close to the most expensive electricity in the world, our area also has extremely unreliable power.

2 out of 3 times when the power goes out for 1 - 2 seconds the computers will reboot. When they come back up I get the black screen and the "victim of counterfeiting" and "This copy of windows is not genuine" messages.

Occasionaly 4 - 5 reboots will fix it, but most of the time it doesn't.

Sometimes, Windows will also complain that the update server cannot be contacted.

It happens on my Windows 7 and WIndows 2008 R2 systems.

The keys are legit - they are from my technet subscription and purchased full retail copies.

I have to re-activate the software repeatedly. Whilst that always works (so far at least, until Micro$oft decide I have activated too many times), but it's a pain in the butt.

Short of buying 6 UPSs, anyone have any ideas how to stop it?

thanks
Tanya

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

There's no signs of any problem on that machine, currently - alhtough it appears never to have been validated, so has neithere the WTA udpdate, nor the Legitcheckcontrol installed, which is a little limiting on the usefulness of the report.

I'm assuming that the machine wasn't showing signs of non-genuineness at the time the report was run?
(if it was, they should have gone now <g>)

Please wait until you get the next episode, and run another report while the machine shows as non-genuine.
It would be useful if the WAT update (KB971033) was installed, as well - it allows extra diagnostics.

Yes, I know about KB971033.

This happens to all of my computers, in no particular sequence. Doesn't always happen, and I cannot predict which one(s) will be affected each time we lose power.

Yes, I have reactivated it. As soon as the power came back on, and I saw the message, I had to enter the key again, then activate again.

It's really starting to get on my nerves.

I fear there is no solution - it's just the flaky nature of Windows activation, but I thought I'd ask and see if I'm wrong.

KB971033 is a lot more that just a 'counterfeit check'!
While that is it's prime function, it also enables more accurate diagnosis and repair of problems with the WGA/MGA system.

Tanya -
What is the exact error you receive on a reboot after power-out? I would advise simply cancelling out of the re-activation request, as it's almost certainly caused by a race condition - which if you allow the system a little time to catch up with itself, will disappear. (we need to see the MGADiag report with the notification showing, anyhow).

What Anti-Virus are you using? most of the time, race conditions are caused by the AV and the Software Protection Service fighting over resources - and if there's added complications from a forced shutdown caused by a power-out, this brings a third player in as the system attempts to repair the MFT.

Hi,

thanks for following up.

The screen background is replaced with the black screen.
The software counterfeiting dialog is displayed saying "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting...."

On the bottom right of the screen it says "This copy of Windows is not genuine".

I always cancel out, reboot a few times. Occasionally that will be the end of it. Most of the time, the warnings persist and so I re-enter the product key, and re-activate and all is then well until the next unexpected shutdown.

I'll have to wait to the next power out to get the exact error code.

I use malware bytes. I have set it to "delayed start".

Tanya

Just a little though. Do you use a surge protector. I would recommend using a quality one. It won't stop the power loss but should stop the surge that could be causing all these problems.

I am not a grandmother. My kids are too young to be married and have kids of their own. A rather peculiar saying tho.

No I do not have anything else installed. I use a hardware firewall, MWB, Windows defender and that's all. I have been infected with 1 virus once since the late 80's. Avoiding viruses is pretty easy.

I can guarantee all my systems are clean. But I'll run the above scan anyway, just for you :D I'll post results when finished.

@layback bear: Yes, All of my PCs, TVs, modem/routers/switches all have $80 surge protectors. They are supposed to be high quality surge protectors.

@ickymay: Something like these: UPS Backup | Power Supply | Emergency Power Systems ? CyberPower Systems, Inc. give me around 1 - 2 minutes on load battery backup. Probably OK for most of the outages which last less than 5 seconds. But at $267 AUD each, I could get away with 5 of them, but it's a little expensive. Typical response time is 4ms, which I'm guessing would be fast enough for the PC to not reboot?

Teaching grandmother to suck eggs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :)

I agree that generally, viruses are easy enough to avoid - but an AV is added insurance for when vigilance slackens. I've had one or two close shaves lately where I've forgotten to use a VM for opening a suspicious attachment and been saved by my AV. (that'll teach me for being curious!)

The Windows Defender in built in Windows 7 is an anti-malware app.
Microsoft Security Essentials forms MS's AV solution for Windows 7 (as well as for Vista and XP)
The Windows Defender Offline is a full virus and malware scanner - and is more akin to the Windows Defender that will be in Windows 8 (which again, is an AV and AM protection).

( I should also mention that MSE actually upgrades Windows Defender in Vista/Win7 - switching the original incarnation off)

Typical response time is 4ms, which I'm guessing would be fast enough for the PC to not reboot?

the reason I linked these APC BE550G Back-UPS ES 8 Outlet 550VA 120V is because you could use one for all eight PCs which should buffer the power for those few vital seconds ;)

Ah, but the computers are in different rooms of the house, and on different floors. Still better pricing than the Cyberpower units at $140 AUD though.

Despite all this excellent advice regarding power protection, I suspect we might be getting a little off topic, which was that when the power does go out, Windows loses its activation state.

I'm still of the opinion that it's a race condition- as such there may be something in the Event logs - but I have to admit to no real idea what to look for.
Pick a machine (any machine) that went NG, and look at the Event logs for the first boot it went bad last time.
What error/critical/warning events do you get? - perhaps you could zip the two main Windows logs up and attach them?
(Application and System)

The 0xC004F014 error indicates that the Product Key is not available - but the system has found a valid license and Key for the da71774d-b2c9-4c42-bb7b-a66365d5abb2 license type..

At that point in the boot, I suspect that the licensing files are being rebuilt (do a DIR C:\Windows\System32\7b*.* to see which ones I mean) - if those files become read-only for any reason, the system will start showing a c0000022 error, but if the the on-boot rebuild is stuck I suspect that they could produce such a response.

compare with the earlier one.....
