Solved Windows Update errors

I have run a FixIt and Windows Update readiness tool and I still can't get these 3 updates to install. I retried both tools 3 times, sfc found no violations. Retrying updates yields the same errors. I have tried each one individually too.
I've also rebooted and restarted the PC.

Have you tried installing them upon a shutdown or restart, rather than when you're logged on? I've found that troublesome updates (and SPs) can often be installed in that manner.

It would bother me though as to why they couldn't be installed in a normal manner.

Norton Internet Security 2012, see Derek's post for the KB numbers. Funny, they enlarge for me and are readable.

Derek they all were x86.msu and said not applicable to my system.

Have you tried installing them upon a shutdown or restart, rather than when you're logged on? I've found that troublesome updates (and SPs) can often be installed in that manner.

I don't have the option of a shutdown install, can it be forced?

Check the known issues, it recommends installing another update first.

If you temporarily set WU to install immediately, have the updates selected, and then try a shutdown or restart, I believe you should have the option (or it may be forced -- it's been quite awhile since I've had to do it this way on anyone's machine).

Afterwards set WU options back to the way you previously had it.

Did you check what derekimo mentioned about other updates being required before those?

I Googled the KBxxxxxxx-x64.msu and installed the KB 2532531.
Also the KB2529073 and now all my USB ports are dead as soon as Windows start so I can do nothing with it. USB keyboard and mouse, no PS2 ports on this.
I am on another drive in the same PC and all works fine. Can I uninstall the update from this drive?

If you cannot do a system restore I think you've got to open WU, click on Update History, and right click the updates you want to remove.

I can't do anything with no user interface. I can't even opon Computer with this other drive, I get an error, "Server execution failed"

I wish I could click anything.

Oh, I gotcha. You can't even boot into Safe Mode on the original drive?

Or if you can boot from a DVD use the w7 install disk and do a System Restore.

That's the odd crap, I can boot to safe mode but as soon as Windows starts, all USB goes dead as a door nail. Mouse and keyboard work fine in BIOS (UEFI).
I'll give the DVD a shot and see how it goes. Hadn't thought of it.

EDIT:
Thanks for the help. I did the system restore and got my USB devices back online. Still futzing with the update crappola though.

EDIT too: I got the stand-alone updates KB2532531 and KB982018 and installed successfully. I'm skipping the KB2529073 since it killed my USB on the motherboard.
I have found these update have failed back as far as JUN30 but I missed it.

WU says I'm up to date as of now.

Binary files in some USB drivers are not updated after you install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Could you try those KB updates with Norton turned off?

That article refers to KB2529073 which is the one that killed the USB. I also tried the one Derek referred to and it said my system doesn't need it.

No, I didn't try with Norton off but a thought for future malficilties.

Hiyya Gary I had a similar problem with a Vista machine this last week and I found out via another couple of forums this

1: Go to Administrative Tools/Services, and stop the Windows Update service.

2: Then go to the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete ALL of the files and folders.

3: Then go back to Services and restart the Windows Update service which will recreate ALL of those folders again.

I did this and the updates came in a torrent as the machine had no SP1 either and I doubt if the machine has ever had updates running.

Whether this would work in 7 I don't know. But I couldn't be happier after three days of messing around this fix was magic!

Thanks John, I think I'll wait and see if someone can confirm this will work in w7. I'd hate to bork my OS since it's split with a data drive and OS on an SSD.
For now, at least, Windows is up to date.

Yeah I know what you mean Noel I might just try it on my tester machine at least if ti doesn't work no harm done.

Mind you it took three days of battling that Vista to find the solution but whe it ddi it did it in a few seconds.

Depending on which "FixIt" tool you ran - you might have already rebuilt most of the SoftwareDistribution folder.

If it was the FixIt from here...
How do I reset Windows Update components?
...then take a look at the "Let me fix it myself" section.

I've never had a issue letting the OS rebuild the entire folder...
But - I have a W7 box that is failing to install the 3 updates that you mentioned at the start of this thread and rebuilding the entire folder did not help.
