They definitely aren't as fragile as some people think they are. The remapping of the User folder is just to keep unnecessary files off of it because honestly, files in that group of folders are just fine on a traditional spinner.

No need to even do that anymore. it's been a long time since I've seen anyone but non-tech savvy people use their "My" folders for actual data storage. Besides that, with Windows 7, you just create folders for your documents, photos, etc on your spinner storage drive and point your appropriate Libraries there.

I recommended that because that way, you don't have to change any directories for where data is automatically stored. You utilize your downloads/documents/pictures/music to keep things straight, and it looks no different to most people.......it is just stored on the DATA drive. Essentially, either way you wanna do it is perfectly fine. I just feel like keeping things straight will cause less confusion when it comes to finding where you downloaded something, or where it saved something. It's all good in tha hood

When you redirect, you are also putting permissions on those folders that have popped up often on these boards giving access denied usage. I recommend against redirecting for the simple fact that there's a better way that doesn't involve changing or altering system folders or files. I prefer to muck with the OS as little as possible, and libraries are so convenvient. Call me old fashioned, but I go by the K.I.S.S. method. If a screwdriver will do the job, I don't bother with the jackhammer.

libraries are evil.
Hell, to this day I hardly even bother setting up play lists.
If I want to watch or listen to something clicking on the file has never caused me any harm.
I added my media drive as a stuck tray icon for quicker access, that's about it though.
The truth is at some point you'll have to give input and assist the system in organizing things anyway. I personally don't see how the newer methods are any better than the older ones. Unless you are a slave to WMC

They are just pointers to other folders...that's all. I don't actually ever have multiple folders as part of one library...but they work very well eliminate the need to redirect system folders.

To be fair, you made a general statement, and then gave a very unique, miniscule example that wasn't the easiest example to follow. Libraries...all the are is pointers to folders. We had been discussing redirecting My Docs folders or just using libraries...that's it.

I've read your post several times and I'm trying to figure out what you mean, and how it relates to a Library. You seem to take issue with people going through libraries rather than just directly to the file...but when you use a library, you are going right to the file. Yes, I'm confused because I'm not having much luck deciphering.

I'm not trying to start an argument. I'm just trying to put the correct info out there. The point of libraries is to organize your data if you haven't done so yourself, and to do away with having to redirect your system created user folders. You've been around long enough that I'm sure you see the common recommendation to store your data and files on a separate drive from your OS and apps. That was the case before...and now especially after, SSDs have become commonplace. Libraries let you still maintain the default "locations" when saving files....but the physical location is now on a separate drive. Roughly the same end result of folder redirection...without messing with core system settings. For example...if a Word is set to always look to your Documents library when saving or opening...it will still find your documents by default...just in the new physical location.

That's it. That was the core of our discussion. It's unrelated to any kind of playlist with media files.

Sorry for the bump! I couldn't buy the new PC because I was low on money and it all went into investment. But I will hopefully buy it next month if everything goes well!

Anyways, I guess I'd update the specs list a bit to reflect the latest hardware.
What do you think of this list?
