Vista fails to log off, install updates.

Greetings all. I've managed to get rid of the blue screen on a Gateway M-2624U laptop by replacing the hard drive, now I'm facing the problem of Vista not logging off or shutting down. I've reinstalled the operating system several times to no avail. It hasn't shut down correctly since the OS reinstall (not a driver problem, since there were no specialty installed). I've also tried to install updates via Windows Update, but I always get 'downloading updates' but it's stuck at 0%. I've tried to manually install updates and some work, some don't. I've tried all kinds of Google'd results, but nothing works.

I'm out of ideas, this laptop is driving me up a wall.

I would start over following the same steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 using only the methods and tools in the tutorial.

Short of that with the corruption you've somehow accumulated I would do a Repair Install

Thank you for your help, but it still shows the same problem as before.

From what research I've done, Vista is not shutting down because something hasn't closed fully. Unfortunately I've haven't found what it is.

I tried the clean reinstall you posted, it has not worked. I still am watching the "Logging off..." screen.

I'm trying a clean boot now.

Establish a Clean Boot by unchecking everything in msconfig>Startup except AV: Startup Programs - Change.

I can't reboot, so I have to manually shut down. Not sure if it worked.

After reboot enter msconfig>Services, check the box to Hide All MS Services, repeat above.

Still stuck on logging off, shutdown still takes forever. Is there any logs (besides the event log) that I can check to see if it's pinpoint-able?

How did you Clean Reinstall following the specialized steps in the tutorial in the less than 5 minutes it took you to post back you had done so?

It took me around 30 mins to do a clean reinstall. I left the laptop on and trying to log off when I left my house a few hours ago. I'll have to check it when I get back in an hour or so.

That's a problem. As soon as I finished reinstalling windows (first boot up, after installing network driver) I try to update, but it just stays at 0%. There are no previous restore points because nothing has been installed.

Display adapter, ethernet controller, mass storage controller, and network controller. I know it has a ralink wireless card, which takes care of the network controller. I'm trying to load Windows Update now, it's said 'Checking for updates' for the past 30 minutes. I'll get back to you on this one.

I don't know if being a laptop it has a SATA controller setting, I'll have to you get back to you on this one too in the morning.

I've done an 11 hour Memtest a few days ago, everything passed.


I've tried to install iTunes and it almost installs (it gets to the very end and hangs). I've also tried to install other programs but it always fails. From other Google results it's starting to learn towards a motherboard failure. I'm trying to get it on it's last leg (my friend really needs this laptop), but everything is failing me.

You need all of those drivers. Can you import them from the Gateway Support Downloads webpage for your model? If not google for the Vista driver, if necessary identifying the device make/model using Hardware Identification

Has it activated correctly?

I found the display adapter (ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics), ethernet controller (Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller) through the Hardware Identifier, and the 02 SD Card reader though Vista's 'Problem Reports and Solutions' pane. Vista was successfully activated. My friend is just going to have to manually shut down the computer (or leave it on at all times). All the drivers are now installed.

I'm still having the problem of Windows Update not doing anything. I clicked 'check for updates', but it's stuck at that.

E: I just checked starting and shutting down in Safe Mode (w/ networking), and shutting down works fine.

Then it may be a driver interfering which isn't loaded in Safe Mode.

Check the logs and other System Resources, establish a Clean Boot and work through the other steps for Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 while we wait for more specialized Updates and Hardware help.

One thing that can really be a bottleneck is the chipset drivers - especially the IDE/SATA/RAID drivers - you should doublecheck that those are the correct ones.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply with details of any error messages encountered

Post an MGADiag report - we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

No, I installed the Ralink wireless network card driver from a flash drive before I activated it.

The IDE/SATA/RAID drivers are different from the hard drive drivers you listed above.
In Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATPI controllers, usually the first item in the list (like: Intel 5 Series/3400 Series SATA AHCI Controller), right click and select properties - Driver tab. Post Driver Provider and Driver version.

This will be a little different if it is an AMD system.

I think this is a third party driver, like Greg mentioned, just need to find it.
Try running Driver Verifier.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
If it won't boot, go to Safe Mode to disable.

I downloaded Speccy, it's been analyzing for a few minutes. I don't know if it's going to work (see this post in my other thread)

For the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I have:
